NYC Her Future has officially launched its Motherhood Initiative on Rikers Island, alongside NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, New York City Department of Correction and Rising Ground, providing specialized support for pregnant and parenting young women. The initiative is designed to help participants navigate motherhood while accessing resources, mentorship, education, and opportunities that can contribute to long-term success and family stability.

By focusing on the unique needs of young mothers, this program aims to foster healthier outcomes for both parents and children while creating pathways toward empowerment, self-sufficiency, and brighter futures. Supporting mothers means supporting entire families, and stronger families help build stronger communities.

Earlier this week, we joined community leaders, advocates, public servants, and residents at Gracie Mansion to celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the generations of Black Americans whose perseverance and pursuit of freedom helped shape our nation.

For Black New Yorkers, this day carries special significance. It is an opportunity to celebrate a rich legacy of leadership, innovation, culture, and community while reflecting on the continued pursuit of opportunity and inclusion.

As we honor this historic day, we recognize the countless contributions Black New Yorkers have made—and continue to make—to the strength and vibrancy of our city.

Happy Juneteenth.

Let's use this month as an opportunity to recognize the strength, resilience, and diversity of Caribbean communities, while honoring the rich histories and cultural traditions that connect us.⁣

This June, we celebrate Pride Month by honoring the legacy of the Stonewall Uprising and recognizing the countless contributions LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers make to our city's culture, communities, and future.

Pride is a celebration of resilience, visibility, and progress. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing work to advance equality, dignity, and opportunity for all.

At the NYC Mayor's Office of Equity & Racial Justice, we remain committed to fostering a city where every New Yorker, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, can live safely, authentically, and with a true sense of belonging.
