Thanks to Gloria Steinem, New York State has the strongest laws in the nation protecting women acting as surrogates and egg donors.

I had the honor of meeting Gloria Steinem to discuss the legalization of gestational surrogacy in New York State in 2019 as the State Senate sponsor of the legislation known as the Child-Parent Security Act. Although she was officially opposed to the bill, Ms. Steinem clearly understood the significance of surrogacy to LGBTQ families like mine and for people who are unable to conceive for various reasons, including their health.

Ms. Steinem was generous in sharing her ideas of ways we could improve our legislation to protect both surrogates and egg donors. Our bill passed by the New York State Legislature in 2020 legalizing gestational surrogacy in New York incorporated the “Steinem Amendments,” as we informally called them, including numerous provisions prioritizing the health of women acting as surrogates or donating eggs.

Over the past three months, our office hosted 23 interns from across NYC - where they made a real, positive difference for their fellow Manhattanites. They helped New Yorkers in need through fulfilling constituent service requests, represented our office at community events, and even helped to draft press releases.

Our interns also got a behind-the-scenes look of the institutions, city agencies, and private sector partners that keep Manhattan running - including NY1, the MTA's 207th St. Railyard, NYCEM, City Hall, and Macy's Global Headquarters, to name a few. They also got to sit down and learn from civic luminaries who've shaped Manhattan for the better, including Carl Weisbrod, Liz Holtzman, and Polly Trottenberg.

On behalf of 1.6 million Manhattanites: thank you for your service, and good luck in your future endeavors.

Thanks to the tireless work of New York Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal, trans young people receiving gender-affirming care in New York City hospitals will be protected from the Trump DOJ’s cruel and politically motivated targeting.

The Second Circuit got it right: New Yorkers’ private medical records are exactly that — private. They should never become political fodder for MAGA lawyers seeking to intimidate young people and interfere with deeply personal health care decisions.

Tucked beneath the Harlem River Drive in East Harlem is the Crack Is Wack mural, painted by legendary New York artist Keith Haring in 1986.

Forty years later, it’s still unmistakably Haring, and unmistakably New York.
