Save Roscommon campaign as success as County Roscommon to be protected in a new law, which will also set up a new committee to develop Athlone, Ireland in a cooperative way.

As a result of my work with Ministers Eoghan Murphy and John Paul Phelan on designating Athlone as a major centre in the new National Planning Framework we have now received Cabinet approval to put a new cooperative structure in place which allows Athlone to develop in a coordinated manner while protecting the Roscommon County Boundary.

There will be a new legally established joint structure to deal with the development and other interests of both parts of the Town of Athlone, rather than alteration of the county boundary.

This will be underpinned by a new law of which will provide clarity once & for all by protecting the existing County boundary and remove the possibility of any disagreement in the future.

The statutory joint structure will be composed of equal membership from both Roscommon & Westmeath County Councils, with designated responsibility for the development and planning of the area of a town including responsibility for certain key strategic matters beyond the existing standard functions of Councils, especially in relation to spatial and economic planning and development. These structures will also have responsibility for transportation strategy, forward planning and land use designation, and retail strategy (and any other such matters as both Roscommon & Westmeath Councils agree). Such structures will not, however, have responsibility for delivering existing functions of Roscommon County Council except with the express agreement of the Council.

There will be a new clear legal guarantee for the permanent integrity of the identity of County Roscommon and traditional allegiance through legislative provision to copper-fasten the status of counties as territorial units.

It expected that this new legal protection will be included in a Local Government Bill to be published by the end of May 2018.

ROSCOMMON BOUNDARY GROUP ‘SAVE ROSCOMMON’ STATEMENT
1, The Roscommon Boundary Group has completed an initial review of the recently published Report of the Athlone Boundary Review Committee.
2. We emphatically reject the Final Recommendation which stipulates that the boundary change WILL happen in four years’ time in certain circumstances. This is contrary to the initial publicity surrounding the publication of the Report on the 24th November, 2016.
3. We call upon the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government to dismiss the Report and to respect the publicly expressed wish of 28,000 people that the boundary of County Roscommon remains intact.
4. The Roscommon Boundary Group will continue to work to achieve the objective to SAVE ROSCOMMON.

We again wish to publicly acknowledge and thank the massive support we have received from Roscommon people all over the world. We invite all to read and review the report and let us have their views to assist us in formulating our definitive response to the report. The full report can be found here;

'Roscommon is to remain intact following a controversial boundary review whose findings are to be published this afternoon

It is understood the Athlone Boundary Review, set up to investigate the matter, has recommended there be no change to the Roscommon/Westmeath border but that local authorities in both counties co-operate more where an expanding Athlone is concerned'.

Proposal to move 30 sq km of the south county into Westmeath rejected by review

“The people have spoken,” said Ger Aherne, Spokesperson for the Save Roscommon. “Given the population of Roscommon is in the region of 64,000, and people only had a few weeks to respond, I think it is fair to say that people in Roscommon want to keep their county intact and are against this land grab.”

To be precise, there are 27,949 responses to the proposed boundary review that would bring Monksland into the administration of Westmeath County Council. That total ... Read More

"There is one shining light in the county of Roscommon, economically and industrially, and that’s a place called Monksland. The reality of all this is that if this were to happen, Roscommon as an entity would be financially unviable. Within 10 years there would be no Co Roscommon.” -- Ger Aherne in today's The Irish Times

A proposal to move one of Co Roscommon’s most prosperous districts into Co Westmeath has run into stiff opposition

Save Roscommon & Continued Support

The campaign so far has been a great success but the fight is not over. In order to continue the campaign, to pay the expenses and costs already incurred (printing, PR, room hire etc) and also for continued legal costs, we are asking for the support of Rossies worldwide. We would ask you to only give what you can - & thank you in advance. Save Roscommon is a completely voluntary group and with your support, we can achieve our goal.

Save Roscommon is a grassroots community organisation that seeks to stop the Irish Government's plan to unilaterally annex a critical portion of the county, causing our residents significant economic, social and cultural harm.
