Twenty-five years ago, we lost 2,977 people on a single morning that changed everything.

The pain of September 11th never fully fades—it lives in empty seats at family tables, in names read aloud each year, in a city that still remembers exactly where it was standing. This year, as the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, JCRC-NY staff chose to answer that pain with action.

We spent yesterday at the JCC of Greater Coney Island in Brooklyn, packing 900 food packages for families facing food insufficiency so that our neighbors can sit down to a full table and celebrate this High Holiday season with dignity and joy.

That's what remembrance means to us: turning grief into good.

A beautiful day of community, service, and back-to-school spirit at Kaiser Park on Coney Island, a community our CEO, Mark Treyger, had the privilege of representing in the City Council and still proudly calls home in Southern Brooklyn.

JCRC-NY was proud to join State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton and her terrific team to co-sponsor this wonderful event and distribute hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to children and families. We are grateful for Senator Scarcella-Spanton’s leadership and partnership. And a big thank you to Supplies for Success as well!!

Our deepest thanks to JCRC-NY Board Member Judy Baum; Kayla, Becca, and Ethan from our team; UJA-Federation of New York; Rabbi Moshe Wiener and the Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island; Sam Moore and the Coney Island YMCA; Operation H.O.O.D.; Coney Island Library; NYC Parks; NYPD Brooklyn South and the 60th Precinct; Community Board 13; housing leader Ms. Lauretta Brumfield; and all our community partners who made this day possible.

This work reflects a central JCRC-NY priority: strengthening New York by strengthening the relationships that hold it together. Education, civic engagement, and community building are inseparable. When we help children begin the school year ready to succeed, empower families to participate in civic life, and bring neighbors and institutions together in common purpose, we build stronger communities and a more connected city.

That is community building at its best…not simply building bridges in moments of crisis, but investing in relationships, opportunity, and one another every day.

On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment secured the final state ratification needed to become part of our Constitution, which is an extraordinary milestone in America’s unfinished journey toward equal citizenship.

Today, we remember Ernestine Louise Rose, the Jewish abolitionist and pioneering suffragist whose remarkable story is now part of NYC Public Schools’ Hidden Voices: Jewish Americans in U.S. History.

Rose understood a lesson that remains timeless: democracy is not self-sustaining. Every generation inherits both the rights secured by those before us and the responsibility to preserve and strengthen them for those who follow.

At JCRC-NY, we are proud to help ensure that voices like hers are no longer hidden and that the next generation knows the history that helped shape our democracy.

JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger's statement on the heinous attack on Central Synagogue worshippers:

What happened at Central Synagogue is an assault on the fundamental right of every New Yorker to worship in peace and without fear. JCRC-NY stands firmly behind Rabbi Angela Buchdahl and the entire Central Synagogue community.

Words of support from political leaders matter, but we need to move beyond the familiar cycle of condemnation followed by pledges to devote additional security and more dollars to the problem. We need greater accountability to cure a climate increasingly poisoned by inflammatory rhetoric that gives permission to target and exclude Jews.

This is not normal.

There is something fundamentally wrong with a society in which people need to pass heavily armed security simply to enter a synagogue and pray. Jewish institutions already devote extraordinary resources to security, and New York remains a major recipient of federal nonprofit security funding precisely because the threat is so serious. However, the measure of our success cannot be how many guards we can place outside a house of worship. It must be whether people can enter one without fear.

I am deeply grateful to Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the NYPD, and law enforcement. Security is necessary, particularly with the High Holidays and UN General Assembly approaching. That said, security can only protect a door: leadership must address why that door needs so much protection in the first place.
