Ahead of today’s City Council Transportation Committee budget hearing, we rallied with Transportation Chair Shaun Abreu, Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Council Members Julie Won and Lincoln Restler, and safe streets advocates to demand funding for daylighting.
Daylighting saves lives by removing parking spaces closest to intersections so drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians can actually see each other. Hardened daylighting is especially effective — using flex posts, planters, bike racks, or barriers to improve visibility and slow turning vehicles, making our streets safer for everyone.
We know daylighting works and saves lives. It’s a common-sense change that is already the law in 44 states and across the rest of New York State.
Now, New York City has a chance to fund it in this year’s budget.
