We can't talk about the affordability crisis without also talking about the youth homelessness crisis. At its core, youth homelessness is an issue of young people struggling to afford an independent life.

That's the highest number ever recorded in the U.S. — and experts believe it's an undercount.

Not all of these students are living on the street or in shelters. Many are doubled up with other families, piecing together motel stays, or counting on temporary arrangements. But all of those situations are a form of homelessness, and they all make it harder for a child to succeed in school. And not finishing high school is one of the single greatest predictors of experiencing homelessness later on in life.

Every young person deserves to learn without facing homelessness at the same time. But we'll be there for those who have no other choice.

Sometimes, there's so much need that our shelters are full and we can't safely house more youth. It's the worst part of the work we do.

But when Prince didn't get that bed, he had motivation. He knew his sister was already staying with us. He had seen that she was safe and supported. He knew Covenant House was his path to safety.

So the very next day, he came back. And there was a bed available.

He made the most of it.

He found people who motivated him. He became a Covenant House resident intern and built career skills. He went back to college.

Today, Prince is two semesters from graduation and a bright future.

And Covenant House Texas has expanded to a gorgeous new purpose-built facility so that fewer young people have to walk back out the door — and more get the chances that helped Prince move forward in his life.
