Thank you 32BJ SEIU and their President Manny Pastreich for honoring me with one of your Health Care Champion Awards! During that special evening, I had also the honor of accepting the same award on behalf of our Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins. I was reminded that there are so many people in our State, legislators and labor leaders alike, purposefully working to deliver healthcare affordability and support working New Yorkers. We have our work cut out for us but it is incredibly important work to do.

I am elated to learn that a father detained by ICE while visiting family in Connecticut, has been released to his family in the Bronx! I want to thank our dedicated Community Outreach team who encountered the father’s fiancée on a canvassing shift and put her in touch with Hands Off NYC, who then connected her to a coalition of legal and advocacy partners. This community member’s freedom is a testament to the power of working together to stand up for our neighbors and using our privilege and knowledge to protect our community! As budget negotiations continue, we are standing together to protect health coverage for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who are about to lose it. I joined Assemblywoman Amy R. Paulin and more than 75 legislators to send a letter to the Governor urging action to fund access to affordable health coverage in this year’s budget. Our bill, S9589/A10926, would address this looming crisis. Madam Governor, the time is now to protect New Yorkers’ health.

Today, all 20 bills passed the Health Committee meeting including my bill to ensure that every health insurance policy includes coverage for equipment and supplies for asthma treatment, as well as additional equipment and supplies for use in school, if recommended or prescribed for children under 19 years of age. This bill will improve access to care for the millions of New Yorkers living with asthma including 1 in 8 children in The Bronx.

Families deserve clear information about the products they give their children. This week, my bill S428A passed the Senate to require labels on menu items with high sodium content. I’m proud to stand with the coalition advocating for stronger food safety and greater transparency, and I urge to pass the full package to improve food safety and transparency.

So proud that my sodium warning bill passed the Senate today. New Yorkers need to make informed decisions about their food when dining out with their families. New Yorkers deserve clear information about the food they are purchasing and consuming so that they can make healthy choices for themselves. It is now the Assembly’s turn to pass it and once that’s done, for the Governor to sign it into law.
