In celebration of the New York Knicks historic return to the NBA Finals, 's Division of Programs and Community Partnerships hosted watch parties on June 3 on for people in our care who have participated in a range of programming and engaged positively with the Department.

At the George R. Vierno Center (GRVC), individuals in its honors unit watched Game 1 in the facility's Beacon Center with Commissioner Stanley Richards. The housing unit is comprised of men who have completed at least 120 days without an infraction and who are consistently participating in services and programs.

While our Supervisors and Correction Officers ensured the safety of everyone in attendance, people in our care were also able to speak with Commissioner Richards to share their predictions, favorite memories and more. The programming is also one of many in our agency that supports positive social interactions within a correctional setting and helps people in our care stay connected to current events in society.

Nearly 2,000 people in the Department's care participated in various watch parties across Rikers Island.

Today, a great job goes to the members of our Division of Programs and Community Partnerships for their efforts to provide people on with education, enrichment and recreation services.

Last month, the division hosted its Battle of Facilities Basketball Tournament at the Robert N. Davoren Center (RNDC), which featured the West Facility Warriors, George R. Vierno Center Beacon Bombers, RNDC ThreeSixty and Eric M. Taylor Center 76ers.

In the end, RNDC took home the “W” and bragging rights. The tourney also helped to promote teamwork, wellness and positive social interactions.

“The people in our care demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination throughout the past several months as they dedicated themselves to preparing for this event. Their participation reflects the positive impact of structured recreational programming, which helps reduce idle time, encourages collaboration and personal growth, and promotes meaningful engagement within our facility programs,” said Director of Enrichment Programs Carlucci. “A huge shoutout to the entire Enrichment Team for putting together such an amazing event for those in our care.”

Nearby at the Rose M. Singer Center (RMSC) that same day, women in our care participated in a salsa dancing class. With leadership from instructor Osiris Cruz, the evening was filled with a cultural experience, camaraderie and more.

“Events like these are important to create space for fun, culture, music, and movement. They also help to build morale, strengthen human connection, and support overall wellness within the facility,” said RMSC Executive Director Tavarez. “Sometimes, simple moments of joy and shared experiences can have a meaningful impact.”

Thank you also to the Supervisors and Correction Officers in the facilities for assisting with safety and operations for both programs.

members gathered in solidarity with their fellow New Yorkers at the 9/11 Memorial Glade in yesterday to commemorate the anniversary of the rescue, relief and recovery efforts. Recovery operations from the September 11 attacks lasted ninth months and officially ended on May 30, 2002.

Led by officials from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the ceremony provided reflection about one of the darkest moments in our nation’s history and remembrance of the heroic actions of all who responded in its aftermath.

NYC DOC heroes served with exemplary courage at Ground Zero following the terrorist attacks. Our agency has also lost 44 members due to 9/11-related illnesses.

The New York City Department of Correction remains united with partner agencies, elected officials, community leaders and families in continuing to honor the bravery of our 9/11 responders. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the loved ones of our fallen heroes, as well as those living with World Trade Center-related health conditions.
