In June, we announced an alarming finding that the Black-crowned Night Heron could disappear from NY-NJ Harbor as soon as 2037.

New Yorkers immediately sprung into action! In addition to 1,800+ petition signatures demanding more protections of , countless local photographers shared their favorite Black-crowned Night Heron photos in and pools.

Last week, NYC Bird Alliance and nearly 100 Avian Advocates rallied alongside Council Member Harvey Epstein as he introduced Intro 0998 to City Council. This legislation would reduce unnecessary nighttime lighting in commercial, office, and educational buildings.

Join Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, Gateway National Recreation Area , American Littoral Society, NYC Bird Alliance , and NYC PLOVER PROJECT for the 21st Annual Shorebird Festival. August is the perfect time to explore the diversity of New York City’s shorebirds! 🐦 👀

Shorebird Festival attendees will have the opportunity to spot and learn about the scores of shorebird species and their natural habitat of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, filled with marshland, fresh and brackish water ponds, and grassy fields. 🌊

Attendees will meet at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. 🌿

This festival is kid-friendly and can be enjoyed by the whole family. 👨‍👨‍👧‍👧

Project Safe Flight info sessions are NOW OPEN! 🕊️

Hundreds of thousands of birds die in building collisions each fall in New York City. But our collision monitors are helping change that.

These amazing volunteers patrol specific routes across NYC, documenting dead birds that have collided with buildings and transporting injured ones to rehabilitation clinics. Their data helps us assess collision hotspots, inspire buildings to implement glass, and rally support for bird-friendly legislation.

Please join me for a very special event FLACO sponsored by my office, Rooftop Films, Sandbox Films, and the Central Park Conservancy: The World Premiere of the documentary Wild Inside, about the Eurasian Eagle-Owl named Flaco, who escaped from the Central Park Zoo in 2023, but stayed in the neighborhood, like all true New Yorkers.

The screening is Wednesday, 7/29, 7:30 pm (“doors” 7:30 pm; the rain date is Thursday, 7/30; check for weather updates) at Central Park’s Great Hill, which stretches from 103rd to 107th Street. The screening is free and we have lots of lawn space, but it’s first-come, first served—bring a blanket! RSVP at the link below. (Opens 7/31 at the IFC Center.)

Today, the Trump administration weakened a conservation law that has protected our animals, environments, and communities for more than 50 years. Under this new ruling, the destruction of endangered species’ nests and habitats will no longer be considered illegal.

"This change will not only destroy critical habitat for and but erode our ability to protect threatened species,” says NYC Bird Alliance Executive Director Jessica Wilson.

Our work to safeguard and enhance urban habitats is more important than ever. Alongside our powerful partners and passionate community of advocates, we will continue to protect our plovers, migrants, and raptors here in New York City and beyond.
