Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. We want you to know this is a problem with a solution. Freedom is achievable, and survivors are proving it every day.

But for every one who enters Restore's programs, two more can't, even though their needs align most closely with what we do. Our work won't be finished until every survivor has the opportunity they need to make lasting freedom real.

We cannot close this gap alone.

When you picture human trafficking, you probably picture one kind of it. The reality is broader.

Over the past five years at Restore, s*x trafficking has been the most common form we see, but nearly 4 in 10 of our cases involved labor trafficking, either on its own or alongside s*x trafficking. It's far more present than the headlines suggest.

That gap shapes who gets recognized as a survivor, who receives services, and who gets left out. Seeing the full picture is how we make sure no one is overlooked. Until we are all free.

When people ask how trafficking happens, they often picture force.

But it usually doesn't start there. Some survivors were made to feel loved by a trafficker posing as a close friend or romantic partner. Others were told they were coming for school, a job, or a chance at legal status, then found the terms were never real. Many were trapped by "debts" they never agreed to and could never repay. In these cases, control comes through broken trust and fear.

The more clearly we all understand these patterns, the harder they are to hide. Until we are all free.

Today is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

50 million people are trafficked worldwide, including an estimated 1,091,000 in the U.S. and 26,000 in New York City.

This day calls us to recognize the scale of trafficking, reflect on its devastating impact, and raise our voices for those still being exploited.

Globally, human trafficking generates an estimated $236 billion in illegal profit each year. That is more than the annual revenue of McDonald’s, PepsiCo, and Disney combined.

Lack of awareness makes trafficking easier to sustain and harder to hold accountable. Understanding and naming the scale and the systems behind it helps people recognize exploitation and demand accountability.
