A note to my fellow union members

Brothers, sisters and kin –

In this insecure time of pandemic and massive changes in the entertainment industry, we have to stand up to change the system and fight for what we rightfully deserve. Our union has always done that - and now it is time for change within our union.

I’m Ryan Gargiulo Prop department member and I want to represent the Property Department on the IATSE Local 52 Executive Board.

We want to change our relationships with our employers - the major corporations represented by the AMPTP in our contract negotiations. We need to fight with a fresh approach, with a modern sensibility, relying upon our union strength. We also want change within our local union community to reflect the current world of the New York City region in the 21st Century.

With over 25,000 hours working on sets, I’m experienced enough to see what needs to change in our industry. But I’m not so far along in my career to accept “that’s the way it’s always been done”.

I am currently a Local 52 Trustee. I see and know the way our union currently works. As a Prop Master, I am face-to-face daily with production fighting for my department’s needs, my team’s safety and security, and my family’s success. I understand what it is to fight for my union kin.

Although I came to IATSE Local 52 without family in this industry, I do come from a strong union family in Long Island. My wife, Jackie Wertz, is also a Prop Master and our sacrifices, success and security are shared among us as a union family. Our 22-month-old son, Andrew, requires medical care afforded by the security we have with union membership. I understand what it is to fight for my family.

We, as an industry in NY, are working more and harder than ever. Corporate profits are at their highest. Streaming services are raising their rates to increase those profits even further. Our union families - all of us - create those profits through our expertise, creativity and reliability. We deserve to share in those profits through wages and benefits. A high tide should lift all boats, including ours.

But we have to fight for that to happen.

I’m fighting for your union vote: to have the privilege of fighting for your voice, your career, your success, your family.

I’m Ryan Gargiulo and I want to represent you, the members of Local 52, on our Executive Board.
Thank you for your time.
In solidarity
