It's official. I will be a candidate for District Attorney for the 20th Judicial District which covers East and West Feliciana Parishes. I ask for your vote, support and prayers. Here is my campaign announcement:

With more than 18 years of criminal courtroom experience in East and West Feliciana Parishes, local attorney Cy J. D’Aquila, Jr. has officially announced his candidacy for District Attorney of Louisiana’s 20th Judicial District, which serves both parishes. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.

“I am ready to serve the Felicianas,” said Cy J. D’Aquila, Jr. “As District Attorney, my mission would be simple: make our communities safer, apply the law fairly, and restore public confidence in the justice system. The people of East and West Feliciana deserve a District Attorney’s Office that is professional, prepared, accessible, and committed to justice over politics.”

Cy has practiced civil, criminal, and family law for more than 18 years across East and West Feliciana, and surrounding parishes. He has served in the 20th Judicial District Public Defender’s Office for the past 16 years. His father, C. Jerome D’Aquila, practiced law for 55 years and Cy has followed in his footsteps upholding the sanctity of the judicial system and giving back to the community.

Cy, his wife Heather D’Aquila and his son William Hunter D’Aquila, all practice law, continuing the legacy built by his father.
Cy’s years of courtroom experience defending criminal matters has allowed him to analyze investigations and courtroom procedures from every perspective, aiding law enforcement officers to strengthen investigations and improve courtroom testimony.

As part of his campaign, Cy outlined several priorities for the District Attorney’s Office:
• Deliver ethical, grounded, and tough-on-crime leadership.
• Ensure victims are heard, respected, and kept informed throughout the legal process.
• Base decisions on facts, fairness, public safety, and the interests of justice.
• Promote effective collaboration and communication between prosecutors and law enforcement agencies.
• Enhance public trust in the criminal justice system through professionalism and transparency.

Cy emphasized the importance of supporting victims while also carefully evaluating each case on its own merits.
“Victims and families deserve to have a voice and understand what is happening in their cases,” he said. “At the same time, the District Attorney has a responsibility to fairly evaluate the evidence, the law, and the safety of the community. Every case is different, and decisions should be based on justice — not politics.”

As District Attorney, Cy also stressed his commitment to working closely with local law enforcement agencies throughout both parishes.

“I believe strong working relationships are built through mutual respect, honesty, and professionalism,” he said. “Over the last 18 years, I’ve worked with sheriffs, deputies, investigators, police officers, and state agencies throughout this region. As District Attorney, my goal will be to collaborate with law enforcement to strengthen cases, improve communication, and build greater public confidence in our justice system.”

Looking ahead to the campaign, Cy said his leadership philosophy is straightforward, “People may not always agree with every decision I make,” he said, “but they will know I will work hard, be honest with them, and treat everyone with respect.”

A lifelong outdoorsman, Cy is an avid hunter, especially turkeys, and fisherman with a strong passion for wildlife and forest management. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry from Louisiana State University and received his law degree from Southern University Law Center. He is a registered Republican and a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association.

Cy is the father of seven children, ranging in age from 27 to 20-month old twins. He and his wife, Heather, have four children together with their eldest being age four. He values family and is committed to fostering a safe and supportive community for families in the East and West Feliciana Parishes.

“After years of practicing law and representing families in East and West Feliciana, I realized I wanted the opportunity to serve this community on a larger scale,” Cy said. “I’ve represented people from all walks of life and seen firsthand how important integrity, impartial judgment, and professionalism are in the criminal justice system. I believe I have the experience, work ethic, and temperament to lead the District Attorney’s Office in a way the public can trust.”

In Louisiana, there is a version of a three-strikes law. It’s called the Habitual Offender Law. A person with multiple felony convictions can receive enhanced penalties, including very lengthy prison sentences and, in some cases, life imprisonment.

However, it is not an automatic “three felonies = life sentence” rule. The sentence depends on factors such as:

* The type of felony involved.
* Whether the crimes are violent or nonviolent.
* The offender’s prior criminal history.
* Whether prosecutors choose to pursue habitual offender enhancements.

Louisiana has changed its sentencing laws several times over the years. Reforms have reduced some mandatory life sentences for certain nonviolent repeat offenders, while recent laws have also increased the amount of time many offenders must serve before release.

Many people ask why repeat offenders are not always locked up for life after multiple felonies. The main reasons are:

* Constitutional concerns about excessive punishment.
* The cost of housing inmates for decades.
* Recognition that some felonies are far less serious than others.
* Evidence that mandatory life sentences do not always reduce crime rates.
