The City of New Orleans invites you to apply for the one-year AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) Program. The program supports City Hall by expanding the capacity of departments to fight poverty and provide better services to low-income individuals and communities. Positions are open in the Office of Gun Violence Prevention through this program. Come and join our team to see the impact of community intervention on gun violence in New Orleans.

Katrina Babies explores the notion that all the children of New Orleans are not well, examining the effects of the trauma they experienced when the world stopped watching after Hurricane Katrina.

Edward Buckles, Jr. was just 13 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and changed his home forever. His new documentary is his attempt to unpack the trauma of that childhood experience.

Nearly two-thirds of all su***des in Louisiana are by firearm.

In 2019, there were 446 firearm su***de deaths in Louisiana, including 24 children and teens.

Safe storage can save lives.

Gun purchases rose to record levels in 2020 and 2021, according to a Washington Post analysis. Gun deaths reached a 25-year peak in 2021.

- Store guns unloaded and secure
- Keep guns out of reach and sight of children
- Never leave a gun in your vehicle

Since 1986, New Orleans has consistently ranked among the top five most deadly cities in America.

The New Orleans Police Department is hosting a Citizens Police Academy. It is an interactive learning experience that provides participants with an insider’s perspective on the NOPD and the criminal justice system.
The 2022 academy class is from August 13 to October 1. The 7-week program will take place on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at various NOPD facilities.
