NEW LAW: As of August 1, Louisiana law now prohibits the use of AI to create child sexual abuse material. Proud to have co-authored this legislation. Technology is moving fast, and our laws have to keep pace to protect our children.

Watch the full FOX 8 segment.

State lawmakers passed hundreds of new laws during the legislative session and many take effect on August 1.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

This year, I chose to award my Black Caucus Scholarship to a student who excelled in high school but chose a different path; skilled trade school instead of a traditional four-year track.

Congratulations to Braylon Houston! He’s headed to Nunez Community College to pursue his certification in HVAC systems.

The Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus joins me in celebrating his path and investing in his future. My office is proud to support students who build their success in every direction including the trades.

Wishing you much success ahead, Braylon!

HONORING AND CELEBRATING A NEW ORLEANS TRAILBLAZER

It was an honor to present Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes with a Proclamation from the Louisiana House of Representatives, celebrating her vision and leadership in launching Her Game, Her Future Fest. A first-of-its-kind career exploration festival opening doors for young women across the sports industry.

And then came the surprise: on behalf of Congressman Troy Carter, I was honored to also present Dr. Baker Barnes with a Proclamation from the U.S. House of Representatives, recognizing the national impact of her work through SYWACIA™ and the success of this incredible event.

Dr. Baker Barnes said it best: “The pipeline doesn’t start at the job posting. It starts with exposure.” Because of her, hundreds of young women now see themselves in boardrooms, broadcast booths, training rooms, and front offices, not just on the field.

Congratulations, Dr. Baker Barnes! New Orleans and so many others are proud of you.

Senator Larry Selders was more than a colleague, he was my friend. Someone I could laugh with in committee, lean on during the hard days of session, and trust to fight for what was right for our people.

Larry served Louisiana with integrity, humility, and a heart for justice that never wavered. He believed in lifting others up and giving voice to those who too often go unheard. That’s the kind of leader, and man, he was.

To his beloved wife, Kendra, and his sons, Larry and Luke, please know you are covered in prayer. Your family gave us a husband, a father, and a public servant who poured everything he had into this work, and we will never forget it.

Rest well, my friend. Your legacy will carry on through every life you touched and every fight you carried for the people of this state.

The 2026 legislative session is a wrap and the work speaks for itself.
This session I passed 10 bills into law, protecting survivors, children, and families across Louisiana:
✅ Care standards for sexual assault survivors (Act 852)
✅ Stronger domestic-offender removal authority (Act 834)
✅ A Sexual Assault Survivor Empowerment Task Force (Act 676)
✅ Housing protections for trafficking victims (Act 669)
✅ The Foster Youth Dignity Act (Act 655)
✅ The 988 crisis line on student IDs (Act 548)
✅ Protecting survivors’ personal information online (Act 186)
✅ Stronger sentencing for domestic abuse in front of children (Act 146)
✅ The Real Timbers Crime Prevention District (Act 121)
✅ Stronger security-deposit protections for renters (Act 63)

Every bill came from one simple principle: government should work to protect people and improve lives.
But the work isn’t finished. Consumer protections for our seniors HB 950 passed the legislature and was vetoed. I’ll keep fighting for our seniors, and for the bills still on the table.
