On Monday April 13, the Town officially settled on the Hahn property. This endeavor has been a long journey. We are thrilled to complete this first step towards establishing our new home on Main St. Our focus now shifts to interior renovations, ensuring the building is fully up to code and ADA compliant. We are also pleased to share that Senator Folden and Delegate Pippy have secured a $392,000 grant to fund this next phase of construction.
This was a bittersweet moment for Barbara Windsor, the third-generation owner of Hahn’s transportation. Founded by Jim Hahn in 1933, the company has been a pillar of our community for nearly a century. Mr. Hahn alongside Paul Zimmerman, Frank Smith and the New Market Lions Club was instrumental in founding the New Market Volunteer Fire Department in 1954. For decades, Hahn’s supported the department by providing volunteers, drivers and maintaining fire apparatus.
I also remember my former council vice president and long time New Market resident Kathleen Snowden telling me a long time ago that Hahn’s hired many Black drivers. During WWII, African Americans served as drivers in the Army. After the war many locals continued to drive for Hahn’s. Hahn’s was a significant employer of African American drivers. In fact, according to Barbara, Hahn’s employed the first Black drivers licensed to haul fuel in the State of Maryland. We feel it is important to recognize Hahn’s contribution to the town and document a forgotten chapter our of history.
As we left the settlement office, Barbara teared up. We told her not to worry; Hahn’s is still in the New Market family and will be for a long time.
*I would like to thank Councilmembers Mueller and Moravy for their contributions to this post.
