🌈Happy Pride Month! Continuing our Pride Month celebration, throughout June we will be posting native plants and wildlife that represent the Progress Pride Flag colors.

Brown in the Progress Pride Flag honors marginalized LGBTQ+ communities of color and highlights the need for racial equity and inclusion within the movement. Today, we’re celebrating that significance with the humble and resilient wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus).

The wood frog is known for its ability to survive freezing temperatures. In winter, they can stop breathing and produce their own special “antifreeze” that prevents ice from damaging their cells.

Stay tuned as we explore a rainbow of colors this month! 🤎

🌿 Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Doug Tallamy, Ph.D. 🌿

We are honored to welcome Doug Tallamy, Ph.D., as the keynote speaker for this year’s Native Plant Conference!

Doug is the T.A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware and is widely recognized as one of the leading voices in the native plant and ecological landscaping movement. Over a 45-year career, he has authored more than 120 research publications and inspired countless homeowners, gardeners and conservationists to rethink the role their landscapes play in supporting biodiversity.

In his keynote presentation, How Can I Help? Saving Nature with Your Yard, Doug will answer some of the most common questions he receives from readers and audiences. Drawing from decades of research and experience, he will share practical ways each of us can help restore ecosystem function in our own communities.

Whether you manage acres of habitat or a small backyard garden, this keynote will leave you inspired and empowered to make a meaningful difference for nature.

Light blue in the Progress Pride Flag honors the transgender community and celebrates the spectrum of gender identity. Today, we’re pairing that meaning with the tall bellflower (Campanula americana). A gorgeous native that thrives in wet, shady and wooded environments, this striking flower stands tall in the forest, sometimes reaching up to 5 feet in height!

We are ONE WEEK away from this year's Native Plant Conference!

🌿 Speaker Spotlight: Dan Chase 🌿

We’re excited to welcome Dan Chase, Senior Fisheries Biologist and Director of Fisheries, Aquatics, and Design Discipline for Resource Environmental Solutions (RES), to this year’s Native Plant Conference!

Dan has spent more than 20 years working in mitigation, restoration and conservation efforts for imperiled fish and wildlife species throughout the western United States. He serves as the lead fisheries biologist for the Klamath River Renewal Project, the largest dam removal and river restoration project in U.S. history, where he has helped guide permitting, design, implementation and restoration efforts.

In his presentation, From Reservoirs to Rivers: A Look at the Klamath River Renewal Project Restoration Journey, Dan will share the story of the historic removal of four hydropower dams on the Klamath River in northern California and southern Oregon. Attendees will gain insight into the restoration strategies used on this ambitious landscape-scale project, lessons learned during implementation and updates on tributary restoration efforts completed in 2025.

Pink in the Progress Pride Flag honors love, compassion and the vibrancy of q***r joy. Today, we’re celebrating that with fringed bleeding-heart (Dicentra eximia). A long-blooming native perennial, fringed bleeding-heart adds a softness to any garden. Blooms typically appear in early spring and can continue throughout the season.

🌿Welcome to the Preserve team, 2026 Summer Intern, Avanlee Kennedy!🌿

Avanlee is delighted to be the Preserve's 2026 summer intern. They are currently working toward a degree in wildlife ecology in southern Georgia. Georgia's fire-adapted ecosystem has given them a unique insight into prescribed fire and its benefits to native biodiversity. During the school year, they organize and lead nature-themed educational events for local children of all ages. They find deep fulfillment in bringing people back to their environment. Avanlee lives in Nazareth with their beloved partner, two cats and a work-in-progress garden.

"So many people have poured their time and attention into me to show me the majesty that is the living world. I hope to return the favor to them and to the Earth by showing others the abundant joy in nature. If someone walks away from me knowing and caring just a little more about the ecosystems we live in, I have done my part."

We can't wait to see what Avanlee accomplishes!

🌈Happy Pride Month! As we've done in previous years, throughout June, we will be posting native plants and wildlife representing the Progress Pride Flag colors.

To kick off our celebration of diversity and inclusion, we’re highlighting the buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) — a showy native shrub, known for its unique white flowers. This shrub can be visited by bees and butterfly species galore. Fruit from this shrub is also eaten by many waterfowl. The white in its flowers mirrors the white stripe in the Progress Pride Flag, representing the transgender community and those currently transitioning. 💖
