𝐔𝐒 𝐌𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐋𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐊 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 - CASES INCREASE BY NEARLY 200
Among these, 4,062 measles cases were reported by 47 jurisdictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. A total of 18 measles cases were reported among international visitors to the United States.
There have been 42 new outbreaks** reported in 2026, and 96% of confirmed cases (3,897 of 4,080) are outbreak-associated (2,513 from outbreaks starting in 2026 and 1,384 from outbreaks that started in 2025).

𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝟐,𝟐𝟖𝟗 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝* 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬. Among these, 2,263 measles cases were reported by 45 jurisdictions: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, New York State, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. A total of 26 measles cases were reported among international visitors to the United States.
There were 48 outbreaks** reported in 2025, and 90% of confirmed cases (2,066 of 2,289) were outbreak-associated. For comparison, 16 outbreaks were reported during 2024 and 69% of cases (198 of 285) were outbreak-associated.

POSITIVE RABIES ALERT - OHIO COUNTY

(10/06/26) WHEELING, WV –Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department is announcing that a bat has tested positive for rabies. The bat was found near Rt. 88 between GC&P Road and Bells Lane in Ohio County. The bat was collected from private property on October 2, 2026.

The positive result was confirmed on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. This is the third laboratory confirmed animal rabies case in Ohio County. Additional cases have also been reported in southern portion of Brooke County.

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department and other county health departments in West Virginia, along with the United States Department of Agriculture-Wildlife Services regularly test animals for rabies throughout the year.

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department is warning residents of Ohio County to be wary of animals acting strangely or aggressively. The health department also reminds residents to keep their pet’s vaccinations up to date.

Rabies is a virus capable of infecting warm-blooded animals. Rabies mainly affects the brain. The disease is common in wildlife in North America- notably in bats, skunks, raccoons and foxes. There have not been any naturally occurring cases identified in birds and it is extremely rare in rodents. The disease is usually spread by the bite or scratch of an infected animal. The virus is transmitted through the saliva. Rabies is a virus that if left untreated can be fatal.

Most exposures occur because people don’t consider the risk of rabies. Exposures occur through contact with wildlife or with domestic animals exposed to rabid wildlife. Therefore, avoid raccoons, skunks, foxes, bats and stray or unfamiliar dogs and cats. In addition, wild species, including wild/domestic crossbreeds should not be kept as pets.

The health department urges residents not to ground feed any animals, both domestic and wild animals, especially in residential areas. Residents should also control and secure residential garbage waste in and around homes and businesses.

ALERT ⚠️ 🚨

Heads up, Hancock County!

Expect road restrictions for paving in New Cumberland starting Wednesday, October 7, 2026, through early November. This will affect all city streets from the intersection of Industrial Park Road at WV 2 to Jackson Street. Restrictions will be in place daily from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Flaggers will be on-site to maintain traffic, so please slow down and expect delays.
