It celebrates the admission of the state of West Virginia into the Union in 1863.

West Virginia is known as 'The Mountain State' because of its mountainous landscape.

The state is famous for fun outdoor activities. This includes hiking, whitewater rafting, and skiing.

West Virginia was originally supposed to be named 'Kanawha' (Native American Tribe).

CDC activates emergency response to screwworm infestations.

The New World Screwworm (NWS) is a devastating parasitic fly. Unlike common flies, its larvae (maggots) feed on the living flesh and tissue of warm-blooded animals and, rarely, humans.

USDA has identified New World Screwworm in an animal (calf) in Texas as of June 3rd. Since that time, there have been 4 additional animal cases (cattle) reported, as well as 1 case (dog) in New Mexico.

NWS was eradicated from the U.S. in 1966.
