Certain neighborhoods will not have bus transportation running through them tomorrow. There will be plenty of people not happy either way, but the district leadership is making the best decisions they can to get children back to school as safely and as quickly as possible.
All,
This is an important update for Monday, February 2nd, 2026. Please read this entire message.
Due to the continued treacherous road conditions, travel is still impassable for school buses in many of our communities. Despite continued efforts by DelDOT, the packed ice on many narrow roadways still has not been cleared, and extreme low temperatures have made salting ineffective.
Therefore, please be aware that some buses may not be able to complete their full route. Some neighborhoods have already been determined to be impassable. Schools will be open, but NO bus transportation will be provided tomorrow to these neighborhoods:
• Rosegate
• Simonds Gardens
• Holloway Terrace
• Garfield Park
• Minquadale
• Collins Park
• Jefferson Farms
• Leedom Estates
• Wilmington Manor-Pennsylvania Ave side
• Springfield
• Swanwyck
This is not a comprehensive list, as we are continually evaluating road conditions, and we may need to add other locations to this list as conditions change. Please stay tuned to colonialschooldistrict.org and our page for updates
Our Transportation Department will be working tomorrow, as they have been all weekend, to continue to assess neighborhood conditions and determine the steps forward for the remainder of the week. As the week progresses, hopefully, warmer weather will improve conditions and make transporting kids safer. Until that time, keep the following in mind:
• Schools will be open on time tomorrow, Monday, February 2nd, 2026. Buildings will be open 15 minutes earlier than usual to accommodate families who can drive their students to school.
• If you prefer to keep your child home due to these conditions, we completely understand. Absences and late arrivals related to travel conditions will be excused.
• If your neighborhood or development is still not cleared and is not listed above, please let us know at [email protected]. Please give us as much information as you can about the location so we can properly assess the situation and pass it on to the appropriate authorities for assistance.
Our Transportation Department has been working tirelessly to look at solutions for returning students to school, and has even considered making designated hub pick-up and drop-off locations. However, concerns over the safety of families navigating roadways with limited visibility and parking made these options unworkable.
The safety of our students and staff continues to be our top priority during this challenging time. We are eager to see all of our students back in school, and have been working tirelessly to make that happen. We appreciate your patience as we navigate these unprecedented circumstances.
