📰 NBU to Begin Neighborhood Infrastructure Improvements June 8 📰

New Braunfels Utilities (NBU) will begin a neighborhood water and wastewater infrastructure improvement project on June 8, 2026, in several areas near downtown New Braunfels.

The project includes replacing aging infrastructure that no longer meets service requirements, representing an investment of approximately $5.2 million in infrastructure improvements.

The project will help strengthen long-term reliability, reduce the likelihood of service disruptions, and support continued water and wastewater service for customers in the area.

Customers can expect temporary single-lane shutdowns and no through traffic in active construction zones. Residents will maintain access to their homes and will be notified in advance of any planned water service interruptions.

📰 City Council approves NBU request to pursue up to $6 million in state water infrastructure funding 📰

On May 11, 2026, New Braunfels City Council approved a request from New Braunfels Utilities to move forward with an application for up to $6 million in state funding through the Texas Water Development Board Water Supply and Infrastructure Grant Program.

If awarded, the funding would support maintenance and rehabilitation of aging water infrastructure within NBU’s existing system, helping strengthen long-term reliability while reducing the financial impact on customers.

“Pursuing grant funding is one of the ways we work to maximize the value of customer dollars while continuing to invest in critical infrastructure.” said Jessica Williams, Chief Financial Officer of NBU.

Important: Water Notice

NBU responded to a sanitary sewer overflow early Wednesday morning after a storm system appeared to have caused a temporary power outage at the Rio Bar Screen Facility, located at 470 Rio Lane. The outage resulted in an unauthorized discharge of an estimated 550,000 gallons of wastewater into the Guadalupe River north of Lake Dunlap.

Untreated wastewater entered the Guadalupe River near Lake Dunlap starting around 1 a.m. before power was restored and the overflow stopped around 4 a.m.

Crews immediately began cleanup, disinfecting, monitoring and water sampling efforts in the affected area.

There is no impact to NBU’s drinking water system. We recognize how important our river system is to our community, local businesses and tourism. Based on initial observations, the spill appears to have been significantly diluted by stormwater runoff and river flow conditions. However, all recreational river use should follow local guidelines.
