New Bern Area MPO New Bern Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, participating in a Continuing, Comprehensive and Cooperative transportation planning process.

The New Bern Area MPO was established in 2013 as a result of the Federal Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1973. Any Urbanized Area (UZA) with a population greater than 50,000 is designated as an MPO. The Census Bureau establishes UZA boundaries. The NBAMPO strives to ensure an open transportation planning process where the free exchange of ideas and information and the opportunity for inpu

Starting at 7 p.m. tonight, Thursday, June 18, one lane of U.S. 70 Eastbound will be closed between east of the pedestrian bridge and Williams Road for road construction until 6 a.m. Friday, June 19. Traffic Alert... Progress at Thurman Road

To advance project progress, an exception has been made to the U.S. 70 summer weekend lane closure restrictions for this work to occur. Lane closures will be staggered to minimize disruptions to traffic. Work on U.S. 70 Westbound will occur on Saturday, while work on U.S. 70 Eastbound will occur on Sunday.

Starting at 5 a.m. Saturday, June 20, E. Thurman Road and W. Thurman Road will be closed between U.S. 70 and the service roads until 6 a.m. Monday, June 22. Access to U.S. 70 from Thurman Road will be prohibited during this time. During this time, travelers should access E. Thurman Road (Neuse River side) by using Taberna Way to SR 1155 (U.S. 70 Westbound Service Road) to Garner Road, then to Old Cherry Point Road. Travelers may also use Airport Road or Grantham Road to access Old Cherry Point to E. Thurman Road. To access W. Thurman Road (Railroad side), drivers should use Taberna Way to the U.S. 70 Eastbound Service Road to Thurman Road. Travelers may also use Airport Road or Grantham Road to access the U.S. 70 Eastbound Service Road.

Starting at 5 a.m. Saturday, June 20, a series of lane closures will begin on U.S. 70 Westbound. By 6 a.m. Sunday, June 21, U.S. 70 Westbound traffic will be entirely shifted onto newly widened portions of U.S. 70 and interchange ramps.

Starting at 5 a.m. Sunday, June 21, a series of lane closures will begin on U.S. 70 Eastbound. By 6 a.m. Monday, June 22, U.S. 70 Eastbound traffic will be entirely shifted onto newly widened portions of U.S. 70 and interchange ramps.

Once both U.S. 70 Eastbound and Westbound are shifted, a temporary traffic pattern will be in place until Thurman Road interchange bridge construction is completed. During this time, travelers will access U.S. 70 from Thurman Road by right turn only as the median crossover point will be closed. Likewise, drivers will exit U.S. 70 by turning right onto Thurman Road. Drivers traveling between the two sides of Thurman Road will use the reduced conflict intersections.

On Thursday, June 18, the access point between U.S. 70 Eastbound and Brown Drive will be permanently closed to traffic. Travelers can access Brown Drive from U.S. 70 Eastbound by turning onto Williams Road, then using SR 1137 (U.S. 70 Eastbound Service Road) through Trent East Shopping Center.

To have a successful trip with your animals there's some extra safety considerations to be aware of. Ensure the trailer is appropriate for the size vehicle and animal. Animals may shift during travel but should have enough space and light inside to make the animal feel comfortable. Take stops on long trips to allow the animals to rest. There are also special requirements if the transport is for business or not.

Safely getting the boat in the water is the start to a great day. Keep in mind when towing the boat, anything loose on the boat has the potential to blow away. Stow them inside or make sure they are secure. Safety chains are also important in case the hitch fails. Position the boat with even and level distribution across the trailer.

This week is Trailer Safety Week aimed at improving the safety of the nation’s roadways by raising trailer safety awareness through education of end users, dealers, and manufacturers on safe trailering practices.

Safe towing includes proper hitching, loading, vehicle and trailer combination, cargo securement, and maintenance. After deciding the appropriate hitch system, properly hitching the trailer to the tow vehicle will help to ensure the combination remains attached, and should the coupler fail, correctly attached safety chains should be your next line of defense.

The most common reason for losing control of your trailer is improper loading. Weight distribution, both front-to-back and side-to-side is vital as is cargo securement.

Vehicle manufacturers provide a “tow rating” which is the maximum weight of the towed trailer when fully loaded. The GVWR of the trailer should never exceed this tow rating, even if the trailer will not be fully loaded.

We will be highlighting other safe trailering practices this week.
