Today we celebrate Juneteenth. This holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union troops in Galveston announced that enslaved African Americans in Texas were free. This longstanding celebration of freedom in Texas became a U.S. federal holiday in 2021. Today, we remember Juneteenth—Freedom Day. It is a time to honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history and to celebrate the enduring importance of freedom, community, and hope.

Juneteenth is often celebrated as a milestone in the end of slavery in the United States, but slavery did not end everywhere on that day. Juneteenth marks when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The institution of slavery was not formally abolished nationwide until the ratification of the 13th Amendment in December 1865.

Juneteenth is more than a celebration of freedom. It is a reminder of the long and ongoing pursuit of justice, equality, and opportunity for all. As we reflect on the past, we also recognize the responsibility we share in building a more inclusive future.

May we continue to learn, listen, and honor the stories that shaped our nation while acknowledging the work that remains.
