HEAT WAVE HELP FROM AN OLD FLORIDA NATIVE:
Get in a cold bath.
That's what we had to do in Florida.
As y'all know, Lily is albino and cannot be in that kind of heat, one of the many reasons we moved up here from Florida.
Cold washcloths, on the head and neck, damp clothes in front of a fan, cold bath, and several other options... unfortunately, A/C is considered a luxury and not required for landlords to provide even in Florida so we had to learn to keep cool any way we could. Especially for the elderly and youngins.
Survival is not always based on 'the fittest' but rather 'the wisest' down there. Florida is the only place on earth with tropical heat and tropical humidity, so it's even more deadly even more quickly.
If someone can tolerate the pruning of being in the bath or having wet clothing and washcloths on them, it's their best option. Most people can't afford to purchase even a rebuilt window shaker (A/C) for $50, especially elderly and disabled who live on tiny fixed incomes.
Drink LOTS of room temperature water withlemon juiceanda touchof sugar or xylitol! Cold water does NOT absorb into the body and cells when one is overheating! Lemon juice and sugar or xylitol keeps your electrolytes up.
Stay safe! Curtains drawn, lights off to prevent unnecessary heat.
Yes, it's weird to sit in the dark lol
But it certainly helps for a short time throughout the heatwaves.
Limi unnecessary movement that will cause your body heat to rise.
I know, I know... it sounds impossible to most.
But elderly people definitely need this more than able bodies!!
God bless y'all!
