The public comments and concerns following the last blog are important, and they are exactly why we need to continue this conversation. The purpose of exploring this issue is not to justify a decision that has already been made, it is to gather the information we need to make the right decision for Naugatuck.
There is no data center project currently proposed, and no one has made up their mind. There is no predetermined outcome. If a proposal does emerge, it will have to meet firm environmental guardrails designed to prevent or minimize the impacts we are all concerned about, and there will be numerous opportunities for public review and comment.
I have great confidence in the people of Naugatuck. We can do something national politics too often cannot: listen to one another, put aside the noise, study the facts, and work toward the best solution for our community. We don’t have to be for or against something before we know what that something actually is.
If a data center, or any other major revenue opportunity, does not prove to be a good fit for Naugatuck, we will move on. We can expand our freight rail project, pursue other industrial opportunities, or develop a combination of uses that better serves the community.
What matters most is getting this right. This industrial park will be a cornerstone of Naugatuck’s financial future for the next 100 years. Decisions of that magnitude should not be driven by national headlines, fear, or promises of revenue alone. They should be driven by facts, environmental responsibility, economics, and what is best for Naugatuck.
Read the blog. Follow the future blogs. Ask questions. Challenge us. Stay involved.
There is no predetermined decision here. As a community, we will evaluate the options, weigh the facts, and decide together what is best for Naugatuck.
