Alcoa is a Tennessee town built around an aluminum plant, and its high school football team has stacked up state titles back to back for more than a decade. 🏈

The Tornadoes turned a mill town of a few thousand into the most feared name in the state, a garnet and white machine that does not lose in December. Whole families plan their winter around that playoff run.

Bell Buckle, Tennessee is a town of about five hundred people that throws a festival every June for a soda and a marshmallow cookie. 🌙

The RC Cola and MoonPie Festival crowns the South's original fast food, cuts a MoonPie the size of a wagon wheel, and hands its brick main street over to the crowd. I used to roll my eyes at it. Six states away I would give a paycheck to stand in that June heat holding both.

Was it always an RC and a MoonPie for you, or did your people run a different combo?

Eddy Arnold was born on a farm near Henderson, Tennessee in 1918, and he grew into one of the best selling country singers who ever lived. 🎶

So poor he left school to work the land, he earned the nickname the Tennessee Plowboy before he ever earned a dime singing. Then he carried that smooth voice from the barn to the radio and put more songs on the charts than almost anybody.

A plowboy from Chester County ended up in the Country Music Hall of Fame. I think we let the quiet ones slip away too easy. Who is the Tennessee legend you feel does not get talked about enough?

Five mallards ride the elevator down from a rooftop palace at eleven every morning, waddle to a marble fountain while a man in a braided coat plays a Sousa march, then paddle till five. They have done it since the 1930s.

The Narrows of the Harpeth in Cheatham County, Tennessee hides a tunnel cut clean through solid rock more than two hundred years ago. 🌿

Around 1819 the ironmaster Montgomery Bell had enslaved workers dig a passage through the ridge by hand, so the Harpeth River would drop through it and turn his forge. That cut still runs today.

It is one of the oldest man made tunnels in the country, and most people paddle right past the mouth of it without a clue. What is a piece of Tennessee history you drove past for years before you finally understood what it was?

Those three stars on the Tennessee flag are not decoration. They are a standing argument. ⭐

East, Middle, and West Tennessee ended up so different they each got their own star back in 1905, one blue circle holding all three together whether they care to be or not. Mountains on one end, Delta cotton on the other, and Middle Tennessee in between swearing it is the real one.

Six states gone and I still cannot choose. Which grand division is the true Tennessee, and do not you dare say all three?

Dr Enuf has been made in Johnson City, Tennessee since 1949, and it might be the original energy drink nobody outside the state remembers. 🍋

Somebody took a lemon-lime soda, packed it full of B vitamins, and started calling it a tonic. Folks reached for it on a dragging afternoon, a summer cold, and more than one rough morning after.

My granddad kept a case in the shed like it was a prescription. If you grew up on it, I want to hear which ailment your family swore it could cure.

Southern Sweet Tea is the first thing I brew when I'm homesick for a front porch and a fan turning slow. 🍋

Makes about 8 cups | 20 minutes plus chilling

INGREDIENTS
8 cups cold water, divided
6 family-size black tea bags
1 cup granulated sugar
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
Ice, for serving
Lemon wedges, for serving

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Bring 4 cups water to a rolling boil in a saucepan.
2. Remove from heat, drop in the tea bags and baking soda, cover, and steep 10 to 15 minutes.
3. Lift out the bags without squeezing, then stir in the sugar until it fully dissolves.
4. Pour the concentrate into a 2 quart pitcher and add the remaining 4 cups cold water.
5. Stir well and chill at least 1 hour.
6. Serve over ice with a lemon wedge.

I've tried every brand up here and none of it tastes like the gallon jar that lived in our fridge all summer. What's the one taste from back home you'd drive hours for right now?

The New Madrid quakes of 1811 shook so hard the Mississippi ran backward and drowned a cypress forest in the state's northwest corner. Those trees never fell. They still stand out of the water, and the eagles come sit in them each winter like they pay rent.

Nobody out here has a lake with a ghost forest in it. What corner of Tennessee turned out stranger than the stories?

Walking back into the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville felt like a place that had been waiting on me. 🎭

It opened on Gay Street in 1928, a Spanish-Moorish movie palace with French crystal chandeliers and a Mighty Wurlitzer organ that still rises out of the floor and rattles your chest. In 1996 it became the official state theatre of Tennessee, and after a long restoration it looks brand new and a hundred years old at once.

I caught my first real show under that ceiling. What old Tennessee theater still holds a memory for you?
