As Affordable Housing Month comes to a close, we want to end with one big question:
Why can’t we just create more affordable housing?
The short answer is: we can. But it takes a lot of pieces coming together.
Affordable housing needs land, funding, community support, strong partnerships, and a long-term commitment to keeping homes affordable for the people who need them.
Creating affordable housing can mean building new homes, preserving the affordable homes we already have, and investing in innovative solutions that help people find stability in different ways.
One example is home sharing, which helps connect people who have extra space in their homes with people looking for an affordable place to live. It can support seniors, workers, students, and others while making better use of existing housing in our community.
Building affordable housing is different from building market-rate housing. The rent is intentionally kept lower so families, seniors, workers, veterans, and others can afford to live there. That means these homes usually need public funding, grants, tax credits, local investment, and partnerships to make the numbers work.
It also takes time. Affordable housing efforts often involve planning, design, financing, permits, community meetings, construction, and long-term property management.
So, what do we need to create more affordable housing?
We need communities that say yes to housing.
We need funding that matches the real cost of building and preserving homes.
We need available land and policies that make affordable housing possible.
We need creative solutions like home sharing, housing navigation, and partnerships that help people access the homes and resources already in our community.
We need partners, donors, cities, counties, businesses, and neighbors working together.
And we need to remember who this is for: the people who make our community home.
Affordable housing helps children stay in their schools, workers live near their jobs, seniors remain housed with dignity, and families build stability for the future.
At Napa Valley Community Housing, we believe that creating and preserving affordable housing is one of the most important ways we can keep Napa Valley strong, connected, and welcoming.
Affordable Housing Month may be ending, but the need for safe, stable homes continues every day.
