My Myrtle Beach Classic Story
When a friend posted about the need for caddies for the celebrities at the Myrtle Beach Classic. I sent my golf resume including playing since the age of 6 and having written a golf column for the Myrtle Beach Herald for several years.
I ended up on the standby list and waited in the caddy tent, silently hoping one of the other caddies would over sleep and I would get the call. BINGO. “Doug, We Need Ya’.” They whisk me away in a golf cart to the third hole. A caddy was carrying two bags and handed me one. He pointed and said, “that’s your guy.”
I approached him and said, “Hello Mr Costner, I’m Doug Kelly.” He said, “ I’m not Kevin Costner. I’m Mike Chiklis.” I said, “Sorry, I ask for Vanna White or Kevin Costner and I knew you weren’t Vanna White.”
We both laughed and bonded over the rest of the round. I told him of Myrlte Beach’s greatness. He invited me to hang with him after the round. First stop, the press conference. When all the other press had asked their questions, I piped up.
See video-
He lied. I never told him about a single restaurant. I just shared general facts and interesting info about the course and the area.
He was a great guy and he could tell I had a love for Myrtle Beach.
Not a bad review for my first day as a caddy.
BOLO for the movie he told me about “The Senior”
