For Presevation Month we are exploring the architectural feature of the corbel. A corbel is a decorative support for a cornice or the eaves of a building. It can be merely a decorative feature or a true support brace. There are many examples of corbels in Muskogee, such as ones seen downtown or utilitarian ones on the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. There's a pretty cool Corbell inside the Hall, too (nod to Tony Corbell who is soon unveiling the renovation of the historic Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, part of the National Register of Historic Places in the Depot District #06001114). See those adorable little brick corbelings at the bottom of each brace?

Today we would like to recognize Grace Episcopal Church, one of the oldest buildings in continuous use in Downtown Muskogee. This is a church that expemplifies the 250th Anniversary theme of "All people are created equal." We are lucky to have this wonderful congregation in our community.

A veneer is a thin layer of better or more expensive material adhered to a surface to improve appearance and reduce cost. The ancient Egyptians were masters of this, as well as the Greeks and Romans. In Muskogee several examples of architectural veneer can be seen in our downtown buildings. The Manhattan Building (originally the New Phoenix Building, 1911) is a shining example of this technique.

Do you know that a window has a lintel or header and a sill? In the oldest buildings in Muskogee those components are often carved out of sandstone. This stone can be found in the Severs' Block (1890) and on the First Missionary Baptist Church (1903) and a few other of the oldest buildings still standing in town. Later buildings built in the 1907 - 1911 period use limestone, granite, brick, or other more sophisticated-looking stone for the headers and sills.

Today let’s discuss transom windows. These can be both interior and exterior and are designed to let in light, and in the case of interior windows can also provide ventilation. In today’s world transoms often cause a problem with computer glare and have been painted over. There are several buildings in Muskogee with beautiful transom windows. Look for them when you are in our historic downtown!
