CHMS End of Year Day of Caring

Charles Hackley Middle School’s Freedom Writers Advisory partnered with the Rotary Club, local groups, and Muskegon County Parks for a Day of Caring field trip at Harbor Dunes County Park.

Students helped pull invasive weeds, plant flowers and trees, complete two flower beds, and add compost soil to help the new plants grow.

The trip gave students a chance to learn about caring for the environment while working together to improve the park. It was a great day, and students left feeling proud of the work they did for their community. !❤️❤️❤️

Round 2 is underway, and Charles Hackley Middle School students are continuing to step up in a big way 💜🤍

Our Student Leadership Team once again stepped out of their comfort zones to visit local businesses such as McDonald’s, Sam’s Club, Target, and Meijer—sharing their message and seeking support from the community.

Through this experience, students demonstrated the Profile of a Graduate by being:

✨ Adaptable Communicators
✨ Persistent Professionals
✨ Responsible Citizens
✨ Creative Problem Solvers
✨ Collaborators

Students proudly continued promoting the Relay for Life at CHMS on May 22, 2026, from 8:00 AM–12:00 PM, helping bring our community together to support the fight against cancer.

We are incredibly proud of our students for showing courage, leadership, and heart throughout Round 2! ❤️❤️❤️

This year, the Student Leadership Council (SLC) at CHMS stepped into a collaborative role, partnering with the American Cancer Society, Grand Valley State University’s REP4 program, and the MAISD Hospitality and Tourism program to carry forward a project led for the past 20 years by Mrs. Kitty Turner-Terry, CHMS Health teacher.

With the support of these community partners and a mini-grant from the Muskegon Community Foundation (We Are The Branches), SLC students participated in a design challenge. Their goal was to take Mrs. Turner-Terry's vision and develop a strategic plan to organize this year’s Relay For Life event.

The event will take place on May 22, 2026 from 8:15 AM–11:15 AM on the athletic field at CHMS (180 E. Laketon Ave, Muskegon, MI 49442). This meaningful gathering brings together 800–900 students, families, and community members.

At Innovation Academies of Muskegon, we are hosting this event to demonstrate that middle school students care deeply and are committed to being responsible citizens. Our goal is to build empathy for those fighting cancer and create a strong sense of belonging within our community. !❤️❤️❤️

Big thanks to Muskegon Community College for hosting an incredible Middle School Manufacturing Day on April 24, 2026!

Our CHMS 6th- and 7th-grade students from the MEERA Lab had an amazing opportunity to engage in hands-on learning across a variety of high-tech spaces, including Welding, Machining, Automation, Basic Electricity, and the Fab Lab.

Students gained real-world exposure to career pathways in manufacturing while engaging with cutting-edge equipment and skilled professionals. To top it off, every student received a t-shirt and enjoyed lunch generously sponsored by MCC.

Experiences like this inspire the next generation of innovators, builders, and problem-solvers! !❤️❤️❤️
