A 2025 study published in AJOG adds powerful, up-to-date data showing associations between doula care and improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Key Maternal Outcomes:

More vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC): For every 100 patients who received doula care, there were 15 to 34 additional VBACs compared with those without doula care.

Higher postpartum follow-up attendance: 5 to 6 more per 100 received postpartum office visits.

Key Neonatal / Infant Outcomes

Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates: Babies whose families had doula support were more likely to breastfeed exclusively.

Fewer preterm births (and early preterm births): Doula-supported births showed a reduction in preterm birth rates.

In short, the study links doula care with improvements in birth outcomes — across birth mode (more VBACs), infant health (less prematurity), and early infant care (breastfeeding, postpartum follow-up).

After my two clients had their babies at the end of 2025, I had to pause my client intake as I had several trips coming up the first part of 2026. So far this year, I’ve been to St. George at least four times; I was in Alaska to see my oldest daughter and her family at the end of February into the first of March. The end of March found me flying with my 16 yr old son, to help my middle daughter and her family move to Tennessee over Spring break. During that trip, I also made a little excursion with my sister into Asheville, NC to celebrate her 50th birthday (she also lives in Tennessee, two hours away from where my daughter’s family just moved to.) I’d barely been back from that trip for a week, and it was time for the long anticipated group rewards trip to Oahu, Hawaii for my husband’s business (he’s worked as a commercial realtor with NAI for over 30 years.) About 40 of us went on that trip between four offices in Utah and Nevada. Whew! It’s been a lot of fun! Yet I’m ready to be home more in Sanpete now. With all that going on this far into 2026, it wasn’t possible for me to take on clients and be certain I’d be around for due dates. I absolutely LOVE to travel. It’s one of the things that keeps me going in my own personal life, in addition to seeing new life come into the world when I support my clients as a birth doula. In the middle of all that, we’ve added 24 new chickens to the mix, and it’s the end of school year chaos and sports, plus all the other stuff of life.

I’m ready now to schedule out clients, as I likely won’t be going outside the state of Utah for another six months or so (at least that I know of right now lol!) I’d love to meet potential clients for a complimentary consultation to see if we are a good fit and our schedules for due dates can align!

I was recently going through my FB memories on my personal account, and found this video that I had shared to myself seven years ago when I was a newer doula. For those looking into information as to why a doula can make such a difference in childbirth, this is a great (albeit older) video that’s less than 15 minutes to watch.

As a birth doula of more than seven years, I agree with this. Doula work, first and foremost is based so much on building a relationship, not just the physical, mental and emotional skills I bring to the birth space. Don’t get me wrong, having doulas on staff *could* be a good thing. But they’d be just another stranger in the delivery room, rather than someone that’s worked with and loved an expecting couple for several months ahead of time to build that relationship of trust, connection and knowing exactly what they do and don’t want. Something like that simply can’t be replaced, just because someone is on the clock as staff.

Ok so many things to say

1. Care with a doula happens BEFORE birth. They have no care or trust established.

2. You can’t work FOR the system and believe you can change the system. You think they’re going to sacrifice their check when their boss is the one causing harm

3. I’m just curious of the processing… these folks really believe we’re glorified water bringers…

Just running errands for the family lol

it’s zero respect for the art and science of doula work.

The issues are systemic.

Speaking from experience here! My son who is now 16 was conceived on Valentine’s Day 2009! His due date was November 10, but he was born on November 1. November can be a busy time for those in the birth world!
