He began his career in law enforcement as a dispatcher with the Medford Township Police Department in 1968. Chief Smith joined the Medford Lakes Police Department on 5/26/1969. He moved up through the ranks and served as Chief from 11/1/1977 until his retirement on 12/31/1995. Chief Smith received various awards and recognition for his service, including a Resolution from Mount Holly Township for assistance provided with a shooting that took place on March 28, 1975, which claimed the lives of three police officers (Aleshire, Wurst, Holmes).
At the time of his appointment, he was the youngest police chief in Burlington County. His tenure was marked by integrity, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the safety and well-being of his community.
