Be the Wurst Expert at Wurstfest!
Wurst is the German word for sausage, a prepared food of ground meat mixed with herbs, spices and seasonings. The meat mixture is forced into a casing and twisted at intervals to make links. The most common meat used is pork, but sausages may also contain beef, chicken, lamb, turkey or game.
The cold winters in Europe north of the Alps allowed for the evolution of fresh sausage, and then smoking was used to preserve the meat, during the warmer summer months.
In Germany every region has its own special wurst. A lot of traveling and time would be needed to taste only a portion of them. Mount Angel’s Wurstfest, Friday and Saturday, from 11 AM to 11 PM, offers an excellent opportunity to sample fifteen finely crafted sausages all in one festive place.

GERMANIC LORE:
In areas of southern Germany, Sankt Nikolaus comes as a bishop with flowing beard and a bishop's miter and staff. To prepare for the Feast of St. Nicolas on December 6th, houses are cleaned and children clean and polish their shoes. On the evening prior to St. Nicolas's Feast, children put letters to the good saint along with carrots or food for his white horse on a plate or in their shoes. During the night Sankt Nikolaus goes from house to house carrying a book in which all the children's deeds are written. Well behaved children receive fruits, nuts and candies. Those not so well behaved… may find potatoes, coal, or twigs.
