Long post ALERT!
There will be a few of these long post alerts so I will break them up by topic.
‘Contract verbiage’
Now that the finalists are announced, let’s address a few things that have reported on that others have failed to speak the facts about.
Let’s START with the $23k that had to be paid to the former superintendent.
Do you know why?
Verbiage from the contract that yes it was voted on by the board at that time. Per my conversation with the School Board Attorney Mr. Pate. The then Chairman of the Board gave him the verbiage of the contract. The board voted on what they thought was a contract of $150k $150,000 / 12 = $12,500 monthly salary. However the contract had a verbiage change in it. The Superintendent is to be paid $805 more than the highest COMPENSATED employee. Compensated is the key word. Previous contracts stated highest paid salaried employee.
Why is that a big deal? Here’s why…. The assistant superintendent was scheduled to be the 2nd highest salaried employee behind the superintendent which is how his salary is and was adjusted to. Now here is where the highest compensated employee comes in to play. Their final check (all are paid monthly) would be their monthly salary, supplemental pay and any unused vacation time and sick bank hours are added to the final check. Add all of that up if that employees final check was over $12,500 that highest compensated employee clause kicked in! $805 more than the highest compensated employee.
Per the attorney in his research there is not another superintendent contract written like that in the state. However, he was instructed by the then chairperson (who is no longer on the board) to write it up that way.
I will add Current board members who voted on that contract are still not happy with how deceitful that was. Yes steps have been made to CORRECT the contract moving forward. For those wondering now.. well how much extra did the system pay out because of that??? In the neighborhood of $40K.
Next topic… Budget tracking… before and after the vacancy!
