Twenty-five years have passed, yet the memories of September 11, 2001, still carry a profound weight. The images from that morning remind us of a day that changed our nation forever.

That morning, precious lives were lost by ordinary citizens simply doing what they had done the day before. Others gave their final measure of devotion, running directly toward the danger when everyone else was searching for safety.

In the days and weeks that followed, what endures just as vividly is the fierce pride, resilience, and unity that bound our country together.

Today, and every day, we honor the innocent lives lost, we salute the heroes who answered the call, and we remember what it means to stand united.

Beyond the Gridiron: Sheriff’s Deputy Saves Life During WVU Home Opener

While thousands of fans converged on Milan Puskar Stadium for the WVU football season opener on Saturday, September 5, the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office maintained its relentless focus on keeping the broader community safe. Spanning 360 square miles, Monongalia County requires constant vigilance—game day or not.

Shortly after kickoff, Deputy S. Pierre was dispatched to a single-vehicle accident on Cheat Road. Arriving at the scene, the initial wreckage suggested the potential for severe injuries. Fortunately, the driver—who had recently undergone a medical procedure—was out of the vehicle and talking.

Within moments, however, the driver suddenly collapsed.
Moving without hesitation, Deputy Pierre immediately initiated life-saving measures. His rapid response and tactical training stabilized the driver until emergency medical services arrived, preventing a routine call from turning fatal.

“Deputy Pierre has demonstrated time and again to be one of the most professional and dedicated deputies in our department,” said Sheriff Todd Forbes. “While any of our deputies would have stepped up in that moment, Deputy Pierre always seems to be right where he is needed. He takes immense pride in his work and in protecting this community.”

While emergency calls occur nationwide every day, Deputy Pierre’s swift actions serve as a stark reminder of the vital role law enforcement plays beyond game day crowds—safeguarding lives across every corner of Monongalia County.

Whether you’re spending the holiday weekend relaxing with family, enjoying Cheat Lake, or hosting a backyard BBQ, please keep safety top of mind:

🚘 Drive Sober: Our deputies are out patrolling. If you plan to drink, designate a sober driver or call a ride-share service. Never drive impaired.

⚓ Water Safety: If you're out on the water, ensure everyone has a properly fitted life jacket and adhere to safe boating rules.

While many are enjoying a long weekend, our deputies remain hard at work around the clock to keep Monongalia County safe. Thank you to all first responders and essential workers serving our community today!

Enable Parental Controls: Use built-in privacy settings, content filters, and strict privacy modes on smartphones, gaming consoles, and social media platforms.

Keep Communication Open: Talk regularly with kids about their online lives, the risks of sharing personal information, and the dangers of interacting with strangers.
