This week, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed landmark legislation to expand federal support for young adults leaving foster care: the Fostering the Future Act.

This bill modernizes the John H. Chaffee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood — a cornerstone federal program that equips transition age youth (TAY) with the resources they need to actualize self-sufficiency and thrive as they navigate the path to and through adulthood.

The modernizations include:
-Expanding housing access through stronger coordination between child welfare agencies and federal housing programs
-Bolstering workforce opportunities and educational support
-Removing barriers to critical legal services
-Providing dedicated parenting supports for TAY who are parents
-Prioritizing supportive networks and long-term permanency plans for foster youth

This legislation is a meaningful, codified commitment to the well-being and success of foster youth — one that directly reflects the priorities and needs they themselves have identified.
