Civil Air Patrol New York Wing New York Wing of . Volunteers serving communities, saving lives & shaping futures. Air Force.

The New York Wing is the statewide chapter of the Civil Air Patrol which is the official auxiliary of the U.S. We operate about a dozen of the 560 single-engine Cessna aircraft in the nation’s fleet and many more of the 2,000 strong drone fleet. Out of CAP’s 54,000 members nationwide, 2,200 of those call New York State home and over half of that number are our youth. We perform search and rescue,

homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, NY state and local agencies.

🌟 NYWG Staff Highlight: Meet the Wing Staff 🌟

Name & Rank: Capt Jared Del Orfano

Duty Position: Assistant Historian, NYWG

Capt Del Orfano joined Civil Air Patrol in 2011 as a cadet with the Lt Quentin Roosevelt Cadet Squadron on Long Island. During his cadet career, he was highly engaged—attending five encampments, completing two SARTAC courses, attending IACE in the UK, and serving as both Group and Wing Chairman of the Cadet Advisory Council.

As a senior member, his CAP service has spanned multiple wings, including Missouri and Ohio, where he currently serves as Wing Historian. In addition, he supports New York Wing as Assistant Historian, collaborating with Lt Col Jacqui Sturgess on an exciting initiative to establish a state historical marker at the site of Coastal Base 17—a World War II CAP patrol base on Long Island.

💬 “As a cadet member, I had so many amazing experiences and growth opportunities to shape the trajectory of my life. My goal as an adult member is to pay forward the mentoring I received over the years and do what I can to make the CAP experience the best it can be for the next generation.”

Outside of CAP, Capt Del Orfano serves as a Board Member for the Air Force Historical Foundation. His hobbies include collecting books, vinyl records, antique desk fans, and other unique historical items.

❓ Trivia Time!
How far back do Capt Del Orfano’s family roots on Long Island go?
👉 Answer: Back to the 1640s—making him a 12th generation American!

👏 Thank you, Capt Del Orfano, for your dedication to preserving CAP’s history and inspiring future generations!

Members of NY-212, joined by members of NY-111, recently participated in their annual visit to the Canandaigua Sky Chiefs RC Flying Club!

Cadets and senior members had the opportunity to take the controls of trainer aircraft using the instructors’ Buddy Box system, gaining valuable hands-on flying experience in a fun and supportive environment.

This marks the 8th year of partnership with the Sky Chiefs, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued support, mentorship, and dedication to inspiring the next generation of aviators.

Thank you to the Sky Chiefs for another outstanding day of aviation education and fellowship!

Cadets from across Western New York Group recently enjoyed an informative presentation by 2d Lt Naomie House, USAF (Class of 2025), who shared what life is like as a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy.

Cadets gained valuable insight into the Academy experience and even received some USAFA swag.

Thank you to 2d Lt House for inspiring our cadets and to Buffalo Creek Cadet Squadron, NY-614 for hosting this outstanding event!

🇺🇸 New York Wing in the Community 🇺🇸

Members of the Putnam Composite Squadron recently participated in "Putnam County Heroes: Battle the Redcoats" at Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel, helping commemorate America's 250th anniversary and Putnam County's rich Revolutionary War history.

Squadron members staffed a Civil Air Patrol recruiting and information table throughout the event, engaging with community members and sharing the many opportunities CAP offers in aerospace education, cadet programs, leadership development, and emergency services.

Thank you to the members of Putnam Composite Squadron for representing New York Wing and helping connect with the next generation of leaders and volunteers!

🌡️ NYWG Safety Reminder: Hydration! Hydration! Hydration!🌡️

A Heat Advisory is in effect for parts of New York today. If you're spending time outdoors, drink plenty of water and electrolyte-replacement beverages. Avoid energy drinks, excessive caffeine, and sugary sodas, which can contribute to dehydration.

Know the signs of heat illness:
☀️ Dizziness or headache
☀️ Excessive sweating or hot, dry skin
☀️ Nausea or vomiting
☀️ Muscle cramps
☀️ Confusion or loss of consciousness

Stay cool, take breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe.

Most importantly, check on your friends, family members, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Stay safe, stay cool, and stay hydrated, New York!
