Pat Davis for Orange County Executive

Pat Davis for Orange County Executive I’m proud of my family’s Orange County roots. Orange County is also where I met my wife, Alexis, while we were cadets at West Point.

Orange County has played a prominent role in our nation’s history from the very beginning. It is home to George Washington’s Revolutionary War Headquarters and the United States Military Academy at West Point- two places which constantly remind us of the sacrifices made in the formation and defense of our nation and whic

h provide us a source of leadership and hope for the future. My grandparents were married in their Army uniforms after serving on the front lines in Europe in World War II, and they settled in Newburgh to start their family. My father graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and attended Orange County Community College and Mount St Mary College before volunteering for service in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart for wounds he received in combat. After serving five years as Army officers, spending a combined total of 39 months deployed to Iraq, we chose to put down our own roots here and we are now proudly raising our children, Michael and Andrew, in Monroe. Our two boys mean the world to Alexis and me, just like all parents. We want nothing more than for them to grow up and be successful not just because of their gender, the color of their skin, where they were born, or how much money they have, but instead because we are able to pass down to them the same commitment to service that our parents and grandparents passed down to us. Over the past several years, however, I’ve become very concerned that our government is not doing enough to combat the forces of structural inequality that are dividing our society. We seem to be losing track of the values that have motivated generations of service members to sacrifice so much in defense of our nation. Simply put, I’m worried about the future we are building for our children. To do better for them and to honor what past generations have done for us, we need a new kind of leadership in politics – leadership based on values and a diverse range of personal and professional experiences, not just career politicians. In the Army and in the business world, I’ve learned that everything is a people business. In the same way, I believe that political leadership is about listening to, learning from, and serving people. Despite the fault lines in our society, we must remember to treat ourselves and each other with dignity- when we restore dignity in the political process, we can move meaningfully towards implementing solutions that truly improve the lives of all of our citizens. The best part of running for County Executive is talking to Orange County residents about what is important to them. I’m hearing the same sentiment across the County. Voters are worried about their heavy tax burden, deals being made behind closed doors, the opioid epidemic that is tearing families apart, and they don’t feel that their voices are being heard. They expect strong economic growth that creates the jobs we need and the spaces in which we want to live, but not at the expense of the character of our local communities, the environment, or costly taxpayer-funded incentives that are provided without adequate oversight. They want leaders who bring the entire community together to solve our most pressing problems and they want to know what their leaders’ values are. That is why I’ve decided to run for County Executive. I couldn’t be more proud of having the privilege of running for County Executive in Orange County, New York. I will remain committed to making sure that government works on behalf of all people, rather than a select few.

At the debate a few weeks ago, I started off by acknowledging how amazing this journey has been. There is no other way to put it- I am extremely proud to have had the opportunity to run for County Executive here in Orange County. And I’m thankful to those who put their faith in me and gave me a chance to show that I could define a unique vision and strategy for the County and I am a leader who is prepared to serve in that capacity.

I knew getting into the race that it was going to be an uphill battle- not necessarily impossible, but pretty close to it. There was one thing that kept me going even in the face of such tough odds:

My supporters- the people I met around the County over the course of the campaign who were thankful to have a choice in this election. The supporters who volunteered their own personal time to provide advice and recommendations, talk to their neighbors, make phone calls, post online, write letters, put out lawn signs, and come to see us at events. The most common response I got from new supporters who were following the race was “thank you for doing this”. The sincerity with which this message was delivered every time was real. And their message was simple- it rose above any specific details on any of the issues in the County, and it came from the heart. It was a message of hope.

I’m humbled that nearly 30,000 of our neighbors in the County cast their ballots in support of me and my vision for the County- and I owe each of you tremendous thanks.

The nature of political discourse in our country right now has reached a point where many people are concerned (or worse) and we seem to have lost sight of what it means to serve each other and, at times, what it means to be American. For these reasons (and others I stated over the course of my campaign), we need a new type of leadership in politics. I think that is clear.

That’s why I’m proud to have made a run at it, and similarly encouraged by and proud of the slate of candidates who put their own lives on hold temporarily to do the same. If our government is serving in the best interests of all of the people, and not just their own political party, then we should be able to go about our daily lives to support our families without needing to worry about how decisions, which have a real impact on our lives, are being made. And this is why I am willing to make a commitment to stay involved and find a way to serve- and I hope others will do the same. Change does not happen overnight, and we should be encouraged, rather than discouraged, about the results of these elections- it should give us fuel to stay involved, speak truth to power, and dig deep to understand how to do better the next time around.

And last, but definitely not least- I’d like to thank my family. The bulk of this campaign happened to overlap with my wife’s “busy season” at West Point, so not only did I make it exponentially harder for her, we relied on our parents for their tireless support- basically holding down our household for the better part of the last two months. Even after being married for over 11 years, I don’t think Lexie would have ever imagined me running for office. But, I think that she quickly realized my motivation was coming from somewhere much deeper, and she was not only supportive, but she also became my number one advisor in private. In the middle of a campaign, it was important to have someone with an outsider’s perspective, not involved in the daily grind, to make sure I was staying true to myself and not compromising the things are most easily compromised in difficult political environments. Simply put, Lexie was my rock and it’s one of the many reasons I love her. We are emerging from this, just like other trying times, stronger than when we started.

And this is strength we need, because our two boys Michael and Andrew are growing up really fast and need our love and support. These days we need everything we can get to match their seemingly endless energy.

So, again, thank you all from the bottom of my heart. And I hope to see you again very soon.

Family trip to the polls to cast our votes for change- it all comes down to today. I want to thank my entire family for their support over the past five months. It hasn't been easy, but I could not be more fortunate to have their love and support. Thank you Alexis Seefeldt Davis, Michael, Andrew, and all the grandparents for helping us make it to where we are today. We are stronger now as a family than we've ever been, and so lucky to have had this opportunity. I love you all.

This was just one of several early lessons to teach our boys to fight for what they believe and what it means to serve- looking forward to telling them more about this when they are older.

Get out and vote today to build a better future for our children and grandchildren.

This is yet another case where voices of the residents, this time in Mount Hope, have been ignored. In this case, the County Executive demonstrates his trademark lack of transparency and leadership in the face of Town planning documents and environmental conservation protection of the Mt Hope ridge line. Yesterday's post from Chad Joseph Volpe, Town Supervisor, outlines the details nicely. It's also important to note that over 1,200 residents of Orange County have signed a petition for the County to consider alternative solutions.

I find it ironic that the County can force this tower project onto a Town, yet we have other much more massive projects (CPV, LegoLand, and others) where the County hides behind Home Rule and allows the Towns to make decisions that affect the quality of life for residents well beyond their municipal borders. As was evident in our discussion of what to do about Camp LaGuardia, it's clear that the current administration will decide when to listen to concerns of neighbors and when not too. Depends on what is more convenient for them politically.

That's not how I plan to operate. People deserve better, more transparent government.

This post does not imply endorsement of my candidacy by the U.S. military or any member of the U.S. military. These stories, however, are worth sharing. And although these encounters were all happenstance, I believe everything happens for a reason. Each of them tapped into a source of personal pride and purpose which reconnected me with a time when I lived service to our country over all else. And a time when I was surrounded by others who were doing the same- some of them who are no longer with us because they paid the ultimate price- in most cases after volunteering to serve and finding a way to fight on the front lines despite what they were doing previously back home when they answered our Nation’s call to service after 9/11.

I served in one unit- 5th Squadron 7th Cavalry- for almost my entire time in the Army. This is a unit with a storied history of service in almost every American conflict. In Vietnam, 5-7 CAV was an Air Mobile Cavalry unit which served honorably, at a tremendous cost, in some of the most intense fighting seen in Vietnam and Cambodia. The unit is proud of our four Medal of Honor recipients, but we will forever mourns the loss of brothers we lost in the fight in Vietnam and then in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am an active member of the 5-7 CAV Veterans Association and proud to observe Veteran’s Day with them in Washington D.C. as often as I can.

Over the course of my campaign- I’ve had three unexpected encounters with fellow 5-7 CAV veterans right here in Orange County.

At the dedication of Davis Barracks at West Point, I was excited to reconnect with CSM Kenny- who was a First Sergeant of a sister Troop when I was an Executive Officer and Logistics Officer. He is now the head Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) leading the US Corps of Cadets alongside the Commandant of Cadets. I can’t think of a better NCO for this job than CSM Kenny, and I’m excited that the Cadets and the tactical department will benefit from his experienced leadership over the coming years. I enjoy connecting with him when I’m back on post at various functions.

After I gave the keynote speech for the Orange County Veterans Coalition POW/MIA picnic, during which I mentioned a rescue mission led by our unit’s only surviving Medal of Honor winner, a local Veteran came up to me and told me he served with 5-7 CAV and we had met at previous reunions for the 5-7 CAV veteran’s organization. I’m looking forward to seeing Alan at future Veteran’s Day and bi-annual reunion events.

Finally, I was at the Orange County Airport for a 5k run in support of Veterans, and I ran into SFC Yates- although we didn’t recognize each other right away, I was convinced that he looked familiar and we quickly figured it all out after I reintroduced myself. SFC Yates served with 5-7 CAV from 2003 to 2009. SFC Yates is now leading ROTC Cadets at Marist- dedicating himself to preparing our Army’s future leaders.

I’m so proud that CSM Kenny and SFC Yates both continue to serve and are in positions of great influence on our Nation’s future leaders.

With one day left before Election Day, I just wanted to share some stories from the campaign trail. More to follow later and tomorrow as the results start rolling in.

It was a pleasure speaking with the Excelsior Law and Government class over at Pine Bush High School earlier in the week. We have to make certain our young people are becoming engaged in our democracy, and that they're well informed about the impact they can have via voting, speaking with elected officials, and advocating for change. Thanks to Pine Bush for inviting me out, and to these students for a productive conversation about our political process!

I'm looking forward to a full day of visiting neighbors in Monroe to remind them to come out to vote on Tuesday. I'm sure the topic of Kiryas Joel and the new Town of Palm Tree will be raised, so I wanted to restate my position on the topic and share this editorial from the Times Herald Record before I head out.

I support the deal that United Monroe and the Village of Kiryas Joel negotiated for the Town of Monroe and the creation of the new town. I commend United Monroe for their leadership in stepping up to the negotiation table to ensure a better future for our communities. I know it wasn't easy. A tremendous amount of effort went into this. If elected as County Executive, I'm looking forward to exercising leadership to keep the dialogue open and transparent, as well as ensuring that the interests of surrounding municipalities are considered as the details of implementation are ironed out if the referendum passes.

I object to my opponent claiming credit for anything related to the Village of Kiryas Joel other than continuing to cost the County taxpayers millions on lawsuits and deepening the cycle of distrust. Lawsuits instead of Leadership. And now, as he's launched an aggressive negative campaign attempting to tie me to Kiryas Joel, we're left to contemplate what type of leader the people of Orange County want to elect on Tuesday. Someone who resorts to playing to people's fear, hate, and biases? Or someone who has defined a vision for the future of the County, ran an ethically-centered positive campaign, and who is undoubtedly prepared to lead?

Throughout my campaign, I've spoken out against hate, divisiveness, and the toxic climate in our politics. To move forward, we need a new type of leadership in politics. It's clear.

Does support from Kiryas Joel disqualify someone from leading Orange County? To Steve Neuhaus it does — at least this year — as shown in
