Lt. Col. Odessa K. Sam-Kpakra made history in August 2022 as the first Black woman to command a battalion in the Tennessee Army National Guard. Born in Sierra Leone, she moved to the United States at age 15 and later earned her officer commission in 1998 through the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater ROTC program. She now leads the 230th Special Troops Battalion at the Volunteer Training Site in Smyrna, Tennessee. ♥️

Sergeant Major Janina Simmons received a Stage 4 neuroendocrine cancer diagnosis in September 2023. The tumors had already spread to her lungs, bones, abdomen, and pelvis. She first noticed lumps in her groin in December 2022, but the disease moved quietly until it struck with force.

After years of breaking barriers, in 2019 she became the first Black woman to graduate from U.S. Army Ranger School. She later became the first female Ranger School graduate to reach Sergeant Major, receiving her promotion in June 2025 even as she fought the illness. She sought treatment at City of Hope, completing four sessions of Lutathera radioactive therapy by April 2025. Recent scans show the tumors shrinking. She now manages the condition with monthly hormone injections. “This cancer diagnosis was not for me,” Sergeant Major Simmons said. “It’s so I can help other people going through it.” She continues her work as an overseer of instructors at the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas.
