Today, on a hot Saturday in June, the City of Minneapolis helped kick off summer with a Summer Safety Resource Fair in South Minneapolis.

The City’s Summer Safety Plan brings together community safety networks, City departments, organizations, and resource providers to prevent violence, respond to emergencies, and help everyone enjoy a safe summer. Efforts began this week with Operation Safe Summer V, focused on addressing violent crime—but creating a safer Minneapolis takes more than policing. It takes partnership, coordination, and neighbors working together to keep our city strong all summer long.

As Minneapolis gears up for a busy summer of festivals, events, parks, and neighborhood gatherings, the City has launched a coordinated Summer Safety Plan focused on preventing violence, responding to emergencies, and keeping the city welcoming and safe for everyone.
A key part of that effort is Operation Safe Summer V. The initiative brings together the Minneapolis Police Department in partnership with the FBI, DEA, ATF, BCA, Minnesota State Patrol, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Hennepin County attorney's Office, Metro Transit Police Department, Minneapolis Park Police and the Plymouth Police Department to target violent offenders, disrupt crime hotspots, and improve public safety across the city.
Through strong partnerships and focused enforcement, Minneapolis continues working to reduce crime and ensure residents and visitors can enjoy a safe summer.

Our thoughts are with Lt. Uthe’s family, friends and the Minnesota State Patrol during this difficult time.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Lt. Tyler Uthe, a respected leader, a dedicated servant and friend. His loss is being felt deeply across our agency and by all who had the privilege to serve alongside him.

Our thoughts are with Tyler’s family, friends, loved ones and fellow troopers during this incredibly difficult time. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy as they grieve.

As we mourn Tyler’s loss, we are reminded that even those who spend their lives helping others sometimes need help themselves. No one should have to carry life's challenges alone. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline for support.

Tyler’s impact on this agency and the lives he touched will not be forgotten.

On May 30, 2024, Officer Jamal Mitchell made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while courageously attempting to help someone he believed was injured. Ambushed and fatally shot, Officer Mitchell’s final actions reflected the very values that defined both his life and career — heroism, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to service.

Now, on the two-year anniversary of his death, the City of Minneapolis has created a lasting tribute to ensure his legacy is never forgotten. The section of Blaisdell Avenue between W. Franklin Avenue and W. 22nd Street is now officially designated as “Jamal Mitchell Way.”

It is a fitting tribute, because serving others was truly Jamal’s way.

The commemorative street name honors the exact location where Officer Mitchell gave his life protecting the community he loved. Present for the official designation were Officer Mitchell’s life partner, Tori Myslajek, and their four children — Jalen, Kaden, Macen, and Koen, Tori's parents Tom and Terry and many other close family and friends — whose strength and presence made the moment especially meaningful.

“Jamal Mitchell Way” will stand as a permanent reminder of Officer Mitchell’s sacrifice, dedication, and the lasting impact he continues to have on the Minneapolis community and the Minneapolis Police Department. His legacy will continue to inspire those who wear the badge and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
