This past August 2023, U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Offices, in the Districts of Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Middle Florida, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Southern Iowa, and Eastern Texas, hosted our first ever Diversity, Equity, Inclusion + Leadership Conference. This conference was held in the beautiful Twin Cities of Minneapolis, MN, Mall of America. The conference was well attended and featured dynamic keynote and workshop speakers, to include multiple panel discussions. For those in attendance (in-person and virtual), we hope you learned a lot. For future federal judiciary criminal justice practitioners, I hope this offers some insight of how you can positively impact and continue the mission of DEI and leadership.

As one keynote speaker once said, "we are addicted to education, yet allergic to application." Let's change this approach, applying what we learn for the betterment of our organizations, community, and each other.

Sneak Peak!!

We are getting close to our season of Congratulations!! On Friday, September 29, 2023, the U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Office, for the District of Minnesota, will host our annual Reentry Court Commencement program. During this time, we recognize our Reentry Court graduates, via our "Road to Recovery Series", who have gone through the program and changed their lives for the good of themselves, family, and society as a whole. This year, we recognize Patrick Esther. Patrick has certainly been a beacon of light, who has worked extremely hard to change his life. This son, father, grandfather, hard worker, and citizen continues to give back where possible to educate others about our program, while simultaneously encouraging the youth of the Twin Cities to stay out of trouble. He shares his past and present experiences with others, all in the effort of making a positive impact in their lives. Thank you, Patrick, for giving back.

The U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Office, for the District of Minnesota, partnered with the League of Women Voters, Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Damiano Center, and Dodge/Olmstead Community Corrections Office (Rochester, MN) for the purpose of educating persons under supervision of Minnesota's new law restoring their right to vote, while under community supervision. The League of Women Voters registered those in attendance. Our office is proud to join in making our population aware of their rights, as they continue to reintegrate themselves back into the community. Their ability to vote gives them a voice.

Attention my Minnesota area:

If you know individuals under community supervision in the District of Minnesota area, please feel free to share this message with them (if they have not already acted upon such). The U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Office, for the District of Minnesota, has joined with multiple Community Corrections Partners (See Flyer Below) and the League of Women Voters to assist with voter registration of persons under supervision. In accordance with the new Minnesota State Law, a person's criminal record does not affect one's right to vote unless he/she is currently incarcerated for a felony conviction. Translation: You CAN vote if you are not incarcerated, including if you are on parole.

Our agencies have joined to assist those who wish to register for future voting opportunities. Please see the information below. You have returned to the community; a contributing member of society; and now, you have the opportunity to participate, if eligible, in the democratic process.

The flyers below highlight ALL locations where the League of Women Voters will be on hand to accept voter registration applications.

The U.S. Probation & Pretrial Services Office, for the District of Minnesota, is pleased to announce our new educational gun awareness program, "Think Twice." We have created a webpage for the public to review, which provides education concerning the afore-mentioned topic. School and community leaders, please feel free to use the website to download posters and brochures, which could be shared with youth to educate on the consequences of illegal gun possession and use, if charged in federal court. Our webpage includes an e-learning module and facilitator’s guide that can help folks navigate through our program and/or engage in group discussion. The e-learning module focus on the District of Massachusetts video presentation, “Mandatory Sentences.” The video highlights how a simple gun charge can result in a 15-year minimum mandatory sentence, if charged in federal court. For local schools and other nonprofit organizations, we welcome the opportunity to discuss with youth or other groups. Please visit our website for more information.

Help us spread the message concerning federal consequences related to illegal possession and/or use a firearm. It is our hope that those who choose to possess or use a firearm, “Think Twice”, before choosing to do so. Special thanks to the Western District of North Carolina, U.S. Department of Justice, for the inspiration; and thanks to the District of Massachusetts, for producing the video presentation "Mandatory Sentences."
