Accessibility is something we want to continue growing into at Mommies Make It Better. 💚🤟🏾

Our Founder & CEO, Kela, is currently studying American Sign Language, and we’re excited to share a little piece of that journey.

Learning ASL is about more than learning another language. It is also about communication, connection, and recognizing that families should not have to work harder just to feel included.

We are still learning, and we know accessibility is an ongoing commitment — but we believe every step matters.

Becoming a mother doesn’t mean your personal goals have to stop. 💚

You can love being a mother deeply and still have dreams that belong to you.

You can go back to school. Build your career. Start the business. Network. Meet new people. Discover new interests. Walk into new rooms. Set new goals. And continue becoming the woman you want to be.

Last week, our Founder attended a Social Work Connect networking event hosted by Kim Howard —an opportunity to connect with other professionals, build relationships, and continue growing both personally and professionally.

And it represents something we believe deeply at Mommies Make It Better:

Motherhood is part of who you are. It does not have to become all that you are.

Rediscovering yourself doesn't always mean going back to who you were before motherhood. Sometimes it's giving yourself permission to discover who you are now and who you still want to become. 💚

September is Deaf Awareness Month. 🤟🏾

At Mommies Make It Better, inclusion means recognizing that families experience the world in different ways—and making sure people have access, connection, and a sense of belonging.

This month, we celebrate the Deaf community, Deaf culture, and ASL while continuing to learn how we can create more accessible and inclusive spaces.

💜 More Than: Life Begins is officially underway!

Last week, we welcomed our current MTLB cohort and began our 12-week journey together.

We started by creating a space for connection, reflection, honesty, and growth. Over the coming weeks, participants will explore identity, confidence, goals, boundaries, relationships, and what it means to recognize that motherhood is part of their story—but it does not define all of who they are.

And we want to bring you behind the scenes with us. 💜

Over these 12 weeks, we'll share glimpses of the work happening inside MTLB while protecting the personal space and experiences of our participants.

Our next MTLB cohort begins the 1st quarter of 2027. More details coming...

For now, we're showing up, building relationships, and doing the work—one week at a time.

Community Ask 💜

Mommies Make It Better is looking for a donated meeting space for this Saturday for our More Than: Life Begins (MTLB) 12-week mentorship program for teen and young moms.

Our regular library meeting location is unavailable this week, and we want to make sure our ladies can still meet in person and continue their program.

What we need:
📅 This Saturday
⏰ 10:30 AM–1:00 PM
👥 Small group
🪑 Private or semi-private space with tables and chairs
📍 Milwaukee area, preferably accessible by public transportation

Mommies Make It Better is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and an in-kind donation receipt can be provided for donated space.

Families have different budgets, schedules, access to nutritious foods, nutrition knowledge, and even different school lunch options.

At Mommies Make It Better, we believe supporting mothers also means recognizing the realities they're navigating—without judgment.

Our founder, Kela King, recently joined TMJ4 to share a mother's perspective on the school lunch vs. packed lunch conversation.

Sometimes it's school lunch. Sometimes it's packed. Sometimes it's both. What matters is making sure children are fed and families have access to the information and resources they need.

Mommies Make It Better is preparing to begin our first More Than: Life Begins (MTLB) cohort on August 29!

MTLB is a 12-week mentorship program for teen and young moms ages 12–25 focused on personal growth, life skills, goal setting, encouragement, supportive sisterhood, and connecting young mothers to resources and community.

Motherhood may change the journey, but it does not cancel her dreams, goals, or the woman she is becoming. 💗
We are accepting ladies for this cohort through August 21.
