Last week, the Middletown Township Public Library (MTPL) hosted the final meeting of its “Community Read America 250” series.

Led by Sand Hill Indian Historical Association Director Claire Garland, alongside MTPL Director Kate Hammond and local historians, each of the four sessions explored chapters of the book 1776, written by David McCullough, and were held at either the library or Revolutionary-era historic sites.

The final meeting was held at the Taylor-Butler House and wrapped up with some refreshments and King George’s iced tea, as well as a tour of the Monmouth County Historical Association’s “Beneath the Floorboards” exhibit at Marlpit Hall.

In addition to discussing the book, the series also highlighted the American Revolution and the effect it had on communities, soldiers, people of color, Native Americans, African Americans, and women. 📚🇺🇸

In our fourth episode of Revolutionary Reflections, historian Rick Geffken tells the remarkable story of Colonel Tye, a formerly enslaved man who became one of the most prominent Black Loyalist leaders during the Revolutionary War.

After escaping bo***ge, he joined the British cause and led the Black Brigade in a series of raids across Monmouth County.

Colonel Tye’s story reminds us that the Revolution was not only a fight for our nation’s independence, but also a struggle for personal freedom.

📣 Middletown America 250 and Monmouthnj250 are planning a Semiquincentennial parade to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary! The parade will take place on Sunday, 6/28, which is the same date that the legendary Battle of Monmouth happened in 1778.

It will highlight our unique and fascinating Monmouth County history and our contributions not only to the cause of the Revolution, but to the evolution of our great nation over the past 250 years.

We are inviting parade participants to help us celebrate America’s birthday and Monmouth County’s unique history and communities by incorporating visual elements, musical and artistic selections, and costumes that invoke the spirit of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

Visit https://monmouthnj250.org/monmouth-county-250-parade/ for more information and to complete an interest form. The last day to apply is Monday, 3/30. 🇺🇸
