🦜 World Parrot Day! 🦜

Every year on May 31, people around the world celebrate World Parrot Day, an awareness event created in 2004 by the World Parrot Trust. The day was established not simply to admire parrots, but to draw attention to the serious threats many species face, including habitat destruction, illegal wildlife trafficking, and declining wild populations.

All of the parrots that live at the WPZ have come to us as unwanted or abandoned pets. Having a parrot as a pet is a full-time job! They require specialized care and constant attention. Always do your research before getting any kind of pet. When purchasing a parrot or any exotic pet, ensure they were not wild-caught.

Parrots are among the most intelligent birds on Earth. Some species can solve problems, learn words, recognize patterns, and form lifelong social bonds. Yet nearly one-third of parrot species are considered at risk, making conservation efforts more important than ever.

To help protect parrots' natural habitat, the rainforest, check that your household products use sustainably produced palm oil to protect natural rainforests.

Attention Gardeners and Farmers: Consider donating some of your excess homegrown produce and eggs to the WPZoo. One of the biggest expenses here at the WPZoo is our grocery bill, which exceeds $100,000 per year, or $1,923.00 per week. That’s a lot of hungry mouths to feed!

Animal nutrition is a vital part of a zookeeper's job. Animals are fed species-specific meals to best fit their dietary needs. Please think about sending a share of your garden bounty our way. 🍎🥕🌽🥬🍅🍌🥕

Happy National Alligator Day! 🐊

Alligators almost went extinct in the United States – but thanks to efforts made possible by the Endangered Species Act, they’ve made a full recovery. Now, there’s an estimated 5 million American alligators are spread out across the southeastern United States!

🐊 Like many reptiles, when alligators lay their eggs the temperatures in their environment determine what s*x their young will be. Higher temperatures can drastically reduce the likelihood of the young to be female. You can help alligators in the wild by supporting green practices that conserve energy, and finding ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

Leaping Lemurs—Look Who’s On the Island!

Lemur Island has some adorable new faces! Meet our troop of rescue ring-tailed lemurs, now settling into their happy new home.

Our ring-tailed lemurs are already putting on a show—leaping and exploring their island home! With powerful legs and long tails for balance, they can leap up to 30 feet between trees. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss!

We’re committed to making the Zoo a wonderful place for both animals and visitors. If you’d like to help us give these amazing animals the best lives possible, consider supporting our mission and future projects with a donation or by becoming a sponsor. Together, we can build a brighter future—thank you for being part of our community!
