Merrill Mayor Steve Hass is announcing the city’s Historic Preservation Committee will dedicate an honorary street sign for the late Leslie “Ches” Kienitz.

Kienitz served the City of Merrill with distinction for many years in several capacities. In 1937, he took on the role as drum major for the Merrill City Band, which was organized in 1911. Other than during his service to the nation’s armed forces during WWII, Kienitz served as in that role until 1985. Called into action during the war, Kienitz obtained the rank of Master Sergeant in the United States Army. In 1950, Kienitz was appointed as a police officer for the city of Merrill. He served on the police force until 1976 when he retired as captain.

After his retirement, Kienitz began service to the State of Wisconsin working at Council Ground State Park for many years.

Ches was also known as a forester, he planted over 100,000 trees along with the help of his family, leading to him being nominated as tree farmer of the year in 1986.

Please join the Mayor, along with members of the Historic Preservation Committee on Friday, June 12, 2026 at 10:00 AM. The sign will be unveiled near the Kienitz family home on West 10th St, near Chippewa St.
A safe GPS address to use would be 1001 W 10th St, Merrill.

Four additional signs will be dedicated this year; Kienitz was selected in 2025, however due to inclement weather the sign dedication was postponed until this spring.

Please take the time to read this from the Merrill Police Department.
The vast majority of concerns relate to children riding these devices. So this is a shout out to our parents. If your child has one of these devices, it's time to have a conversation about proper and considerate riding. If you don't know, bring them to us and we can tackle it together. As is customary, if you have any questions, give us a call.

There has been a lot of conversation, general complaints, and general concern about the advent of e-bikes and other related devices. We are not the only community with these questions and concerns. Any searching will reveal headlines across the nation including terrible crashes. As you can imagine, often times the technology outpaces any regulation but the graphic below is designed to simplify the current state laws for you in a format you can read on this platform. Please note our local ordinance exception for operation of bicycles on the sidewalk 36-181.
To simplify it even more, IF it is a legal conveyance then normal traffic rules do apply. The vast majority of complaints brought to our attention would be a violation on a traditional pedal bike as well (failure to stop as required, etc).
Generally speaking, most E-Moto's are not made to be street legal. There are very few brands making a street legal E-Moto and that would require title, registration, insurance, and proper driver licensing. Most E-Motos are designed for off-highway use.

The City of Merrill recognizes June as Elder Abuse Prevention Month.

Mayor Steve Hass signed a proclamation reaffirming our community’s commitment to protecting older adults and promoting dignity, respect, and safety for all seniors.

Elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation can affect vulnerable individuals and families in every community. Awareness, education, and support are important steps in prevention.

We encourage residents to:
💜 Learn the signs of elder abuse
💜 Support caregivers and older adults
💜 Check in on friends, neighbors, and loved ones
💜 Report suspected abuse to proper authorities

Together, we can help ensure every senior in our community is treated with the care, respect, and dignity they deserve.
