Part 2 on Breathing (with a diaphragm release)

Give this a try, and let me know how it feels!

Were you able to feel the muscles expand in your rib cage on the sides? In the back? In your pelvic floor muscles?

Let me know if you are struggling, and I’m happy to help you learn to connect to your muscles a little bit better!

“Enjoy the journey”

We know that diets don’t work, and sustaining anything you absolutely cannot stand will destroy your will to live.

At Beyond The Body, we practice sustainable changes by meeting you where you’re at. You’re never pressured to make any certain changes, and you have the right to say no to anything we suggest.

Have you heard that your taste buds change every 10 days? (Apparently they do, slightly!)
Your brain is also trainable, and capacity can change over time. What you can tolerate physically changes over time.

It’s up to you as to whether you want those changes to be positive or negative.

“Belly button to spine”
“Brace like someone is going to punch you in the stomach”
“Zip up the corset”

In isolation, these cues can be harmful over time, but when you understand how their pressure is managed from an anatomy standpoint you kind of get where they came from.

Everyone deserves a full explanation of how their anatomy works, and what they’re aiming for with their training. Here is a detailed explanation of what we’re doing when we’re breathing deeply.

Did you know that 12% of the general population struggles with dysfunctional breathing?

Although there are no correlated studies to neurodivergence and breathing patterns, it is estimated that this population is more at risk for dysfunctional breathing due to extra lax connective tissue with hypermobility (including around our organs!!) and its association with altered nervous system regulation. I truly believe our chronic ‘fight or flight’ society has programmed us all to be chest breathers by nature.

On the bright side, practicing this type of breathing can help you come back to your body, facilitate mind-muscle connection, connect to your core, and down shift your nervous system.

This exercise doesn’t get old. It’s a daily practice.

Follow along for part 2 where I plan to share a little diaphragm release to help add on to your practice.

Hi, I’m hypermobile, and here are some signs you might be too!

You might be hypermobile if when you’re exercising, you spend more time in your end ranges than able to control the mid range of the motion.

You might be hypermobile if you can’t get comfortable unless you’re in a ridiculously contorted position. (Do you sleep like a t-Rex? Do you always have your feet up and/or hips popped to the side when sitting? When standing, are you always leaning on a hip & your joints for stability?)

If you loved your pregnancy pillow for far too long after pregnancy (despite it being obnoxiously huge) like me, you might be hypermobile.

Other common symptoms/signs to look for include but not limited to:
- jaw pain / TMJ issues
- pelvic floor dysfunction
- frequent bruises (we struggle with proprioception- hello always running into that dang coffee table!)
- Neurodiversity
- fatigue
- migraines
- stretchy skin
- visible hair follicles

My training approach focuses on helping you learn to listen to connect to your body, to even understand how you may be impacted by this. I remember before my fitness journey even knowing what “connect to my core” even truly meant. My goal is that all of my clients can walk away confidently knowing how to connect to their core. I can help you with personalized exercises to improve stability and your proprioception, and coach you through specific struggles you may be having. I’m not going to hesitate to refer you to the appropriate provider who can help. It takes a team, and you’re the manager of that team!

👋 Hi- I’m Kristi, and I’m a social worker and a personal trainer- helping you to improve your relationship with all things health and movement!

Let’s be better together!

I was doing research on impacts of nutrition with connective tissue disorders (ie hypermobility). I was going to spew about how important nutrition can be for us fellow zebras, but I landed on that not being as exciting as this

I’m going to start sharing my journey as I limit/ eliminate gluten, and make some small and sustainable shifts to my dietary intake, but in my true fashion- I’m going to share the data I’m tracking along with it.

My diet has been lax ever since my daughter’s birthday. I know I felt better when I wasn’t eating gluten. I don’t have immediate pain when I eat gluten, and that’s why this is such a slippery slope.

Over time, my bucket has gotten too full, and my pain has been terrible. My dizziness and POTS symptoms have SPIRALED 🌀

I know what I need to do, but here I’m going to bring you along.

Elimination diets have been extra tricky for me as someone who has historically struggled with disordered eating habits since middle/high school.

I will be focusing on consistency, and an all or something approach. Focusing on limiting, and not beating myself up.

Let me know if you’re interested in any other trending information that I’m tracking.
Currently I’m using mostly a 0 (low)-10 (high)scale.

As of today my results are:
Chronic pain: 7
POTS: 7.5
Fatigue: 6.5
Depression: 5
Anxiety: 4.5
Focus: 3.5
Leg texture: lumpy, bumpy, 4-5 bruises

I was recently talking with a friend about disenfranchised grief, and it really hit home for me.
The process of learning to honor your ND self in a world that highly favors neurotypical brains is challenging.
Learning to hold space for yourself may be the hardest lesson of them all, it has been for me that’s for sure.

As a true neurodivergent, I can see so many connections in the world. Everything is really so interconnected.
I love exercise for many reasons, but one of the biggest ones is that it has helped me to move my energy within my body to process so many emotions. In addition to the movement and bilateral stimulation you receive when walking and exercising, it’s great for improving discomfort tolerance.

Hard truth here: No one starts a new habit WANTING to exercise every single morning. No one wakes up daily with that kind of motivation. The dopamine hit wears off and it gets TOUGH!!! That’s when most people quit and fall off the wagon. But when you continuously wake up each morning and choose to do the hard thing that you don’t want to
 That’s building that discomfort tolerance

And why is discomfort so important?
Because I don’t always get my way.
Because I feel so deeply and so hurt when others I love hurt.
Because I have two kids.
I feel so deeply when I lose someone I love.
And I am learning to sit in those hard spaces without running away. 💚

It’s always deeper than ‘just exercise’
 It’s all connected 😉

And do all my other deeply feeling friends. I see you. I feel you. You’re so capable of the hard things.

Just a few of the many reasons people chose to start working with me as their personal trainer.

I’ve always believed that the best professions see someone in their profession to learn and grow from. And as someone who has been on both ends- our bodies are efficient! They compensate when we think we have proper form via the mirror. It can be so helpful to work with a trained movement professional who can help you to identify your movement patterns and give you targeted exercises that are personalized for you (and they make sure you’re doing it right, not just going through the motions!).

If you’re curious on training, book a free call via the link in my bio to see if we’d be a good fit!
