This week, the White House characterized peaceful protesters as a "Hate America" rally along with other disparaging remarks. Today, the Governor of Texas sent the state National Guard to Austin's NoKings protest. The attacks against NoKings reminds me of the famous quote, often misattributed to Gandhi.
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win".
The quote was first spoken by trade unionist Nicholas Klein in 1918 who delivered a rousing speech about the future of the labor movement. Klein's words remind us that we are not alone. That all of us workers are part of a legacy. We are reminded that unions of working people have been fighting against concentrated power for centuries. We beat the Robber Barrons, and we will put the Oligarchs in their place too.
As we've seen in recent weeks, masked goons from ICE and Dept of Homeland Security are targeting parents and children outside schools, landscapers, construction workers, restaurant workers, convenience store clerks, people walking down the street minding their own business. The pattern is stark and clear: ICE is targeting the workers who contribute so much and actually make our country great.
As horrific as ICE has been, it has been equally uplifting to witness the power of the people. Viral videos of people confronting ICE, non-violently and effectively. There's the food delivery worker who became a symbol of resistance when he escaped from dozens of heavily armed agents on his bike. We have seen the community response in LA and Chicago outside ICE facilities and in communities, mutual aid networks and alert systems. The Portland Frog. We have read stories of random strangers hiding undocumented families in their apartments, chillingly reminiscent of the story of Anne Frank.
NoKings has captured national attention and Trump's ire. Tomorrow millions of Americans across the nation — and indeed around the world—will hit the streets in a peaceful demonstration of our power. It will be beyond clear to everyone watching around the world that we do not hate America. We're expressing our right to protest because we love our rights, we love our neighbors, and we love our country.
We got our signs, we got our costumes. We're going to dance. We're gonna have fun.
We are going to win. 🐸✊
