The origin of Fireworks for Independence Day!!

The Independence Day tradition dates nearly as far back as the country's beginning and was proposed by one of the Founding Fathers. The first organized celebration was held on July 4, 1777.

On July 4, after making a total of 86 (mostly small) changes to Jefferson’s draft, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, though most of the delegates didn’t even sign the document until August 2. Some impromptu celebrations greeted the declaration’s first public readings on July 8, in front of local militia troops in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, but the first organized celebration of Independence Day would take place in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777.

“Yesterday the 4th of July, being the anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America, was celebrated in this city with demonstrations of joy and festivity,” reported the Pennsylvania Evening Post on July 5, 1777. “About noon all the armed ships and gallies in the river were drawn up before the city, dressed in the gayest manner, with the colors of the United States and streamers displayed.”

After each ship’s cannon fired a 13-gun salute (in honor of the 13 colonies), the festivities continued, including an elegant dinner, a military demonstration and a performance by a Hessian band. “The evening was closed with the ringing of bells,” the Evening Post reported, “and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”

When Milton Hershey founded the Hershey Chocolate Company in 1894, he became an almost overnight success. And shortly after he sold his first candy bar, he decided to give back and share the wealth as he embarked on public works projects and built a utopian community for his factory workers and their families. And although he loved children, he and his wife couldn't have any of their own — so he founded a school for orphaned boys and paid their tuition with profits from the company.

At Hershey's school, the boys could join sports clubs, learn music, and get free meals and uniforms. And upon graduation, every student would be gifted $100 and have a guaranteed job at his factory if they chose. After his wife died in 1915, Hershey donated most of his shares of the Hershey company to the school, so that it could become self-sufficient. And by the time he died in 1945, the trust he'd set up for the school with his own money was worth more than $80 million. To this day, the Milton Hershey School remains the largest shareholder in the Hershey Company. Go inside the sweet story of Milton Hershey: https://bit.ly/34jzU6i

Back in 1947, Harry Truman became the first U.S. president to deliver a televised address, but John F. Kennedy was the first candidate to effectively leverage the medium of TV to win the White House.

The turning point for Kennedy were the 1960 debates with Richard Nixon, the first presidential debates to be broadcast live on national television. Listening on the radio, political observers thought the two men were neck and neck. But TV gave the win to the young, athletic and tanned Kennedy, who made the older Nixon—just out of the hospital after knee surgery—look pallid and weak.

“JFK masters television as does Ronald Reagan,” says Kearns Goodwin. “They know how to speak to the camera. They know how to use their charisma and their looks and their speaking ability, and to reach the public that way.”
