St. James Haven

St. James Haven Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph, St. James Haven is a homeless shelter for men. St. to 8:00 a.m.

James Haven, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, provides safe shelter and support for homeless men 365 days a year from 6:00 p.m. Each night, guests receive a warm meal, a hot shower, hygiene products, and a comfortable bed in a welcoming environment. Our goal is to offer a place where men can regain stability without the immediate worry of where they will sleep or eat. We believe in providing a

hand up, not a handout, working closely with local social service agencies to help our guests transition into independent living. Staffed by an Executive Director and two live-in managers, St. James Haven is supported by a dedicated board of directors, nightly visitors, and volunteers who ensure each guest is treated with kindness, respect, and dignity. We receive no ongoing government or state funding and rely entirely on the generosity of our community to continue our mission. If you would like to support us through donations or volunteering, please reach outβ€”we would love to partner with you to make a difference.

Welcome to this week's HEARTS BEHIND THE HAVEN!

Through these posts, you'll meet the volunteer Board members who are behind-the-scenes of the Haven's Community Drive-Thru Dinners, special events, and many of the daily operations. With the support of our community, the mission of St. James Haven is not only possible, it's happening.

πŸ‘‰This week we'll meet Kimberly Bidwell. Kim is one of the board's newest members, but she's already made a big positive impact. With a professional background in drug and alcohol recovery, Kim has been a huge asset to our ongoing transitional-living project. She also brings to the board her creative and hands-on talents, designing and fabricating the medals for our "Run for Shelter" 5K event. We appreciate all that she brings to the group. Make sure to say hello to Kim below!

"Kimberly Bidwell is the Case Management Supervisor at Crawford County Drug & Alcohol, where she has worked for 20 years. She oversees case management services and works across systems to help individuals navigate recovery and access the support they need.

After stepping into her supervisory role, her work began to overlap more with St. James, leading to a strong working relationship with Samantha. This led to them working together on a funding proposal for the transitional living project, offering insight on substance use and recovery needs. Working alongside St. James gave her a clear view of the organization’s role in the community, which led her to join the Board of Directors.

Welcome to another installment of HEARTS BEHIND THE HAVEN!

Through these posts, you'll meet the volunteer Board members who are behind-the-scenes of the Haven's Community Drive-Thru Dinners, special events, and many of the daily operations. With the support of our community, the mission of St. James Haven is not only possible, it's happening.

πŸ‘‰This week we'll meet Sister Clare Marie Beichner, a true community champion. Sister Clare Marie joins us as one of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania, bringing with her much experience in ministry and community support programs. We appreciate her heartfelt time and attention each time we meet. Make sure to say hello to Sister Clare Marie below!

πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™
Nurtured in faith and family values from her roots in Clarion County, Sister Clare Marie Beichner is a graduate of Clarion University and University of Pittsburgh. Her experience includes 16 years of teaching in Catholic Schools in DuBois and Erie, primarily at the Junior High level. As a Licensed Social Worker, she ministered at Prince of Peace Center in Mercer County for the next 15 years. Prince of Peace as part of Catholic Charities, offers Emergency and Family Supportive Services with the needy in the Shenango Valley. She and another Sister established Catholic Rural Ministry providing spiritual support for the Catholic parishes and schools of Venango and Clarion counties.

As a Sister of St. Joseph for 47 years, she has served her community in formation and Leadership ministries, while participating in many committees and Boards. Sister Clare Marie has a strong interest in supporting justice among the impoverished and improving our world through active involvement. Currently she is in Pastoral Care ministry at St. Vincent Hospital in Erie. There has always been a special place in her heart for the homeless and has been an active SSJ liaison and board member with St. James Haven since 2011. Building relationships and self-care are vital for Sister Clare Marie so she finds time daily to be renewed in prayer, reading and nature.

β€œBeing an active supporter of St. James Haven continues to inspire me that we are all creatures of our loving God, and we are to respond to individuals in our midst with a loving and gracious hospitality. I am amazed at the growth and evolving ministry of St James with the homeless in their collaborative efforts to meet the needs of the whole person and helping them to become even more productive citizens. God has blessed the Haven with solid Leadership under the wise stewardship of Samantha Stump and a strong Board of Directors.”

It was all smiles on a beautiful morning for our Inaugural Run for Shelter 5K. β˜€οΈπŸƒ

On behalf of the Haven's board, thank you to everyone who contributed to this first-time event - sponsors, participants, volunteers, and community partners. Your support brought the Run for Shelter to life!

The intention of this event goes beyond fundraising - it's an opportunity to spread awareness of the realities of homelessness in our community. It's a chance to highlight what works well within our community, and what we can change. And it's a way of connecting people... to resources, to volunteer opportunities, and to one another.

The positive impact of the Haven is a shared effort, and we appreciate your support. Go ahead and smile BIG, because great things are happening at the Haven.

This week we'll meet Kim Adsit, a familiar face within the community, and a powerful force on the Haven's team. Kim was instrumental in bringing our monthly Community Drive-Thru Dinners to life, and continues to support these and other Haven events today. Make sure to say hello to Kim below!

πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™
"Kim Adsit is the Business Manager at Vision Source Meadville, a local eye care practice founded by her husband, Dr. Chris Adsit. The practice’s mission is to β€œShow the Light and Life of Jesus Christ to those around us by meeting their physical needs,” which aligns closely with the mission of St. James Haven.

Kim first connected with St. James Haven in the spring of 2023 through the Grand Leprechaun contest, a local fundraiser where business leaders support area nonprofits. She chose to represent the Haven and helped organize a community drive-thru dinner, which raised just over $4,000. That initial event led to the idea of holding regular donation-supported dinners, and now a homemade meal is served to up to 150 people on the third Thursday of each month.

Kim also serves on the Haven’s fundraising committee and helps plan our annual Sound Off for St. James benefit concert."
