Today felt awesome. KSHD (Shenandoah Valley Airport) only made it up to 78F after a morning low of 47F under mostly sunny skies and light winds. Hard to beat.

The Canadian high responsible for this cool down is now beginning to shift offshore and with that, southerly return flow is starting to take over. This will really bump up the heat and humidity the next several days, likely peaking Thursday and Friday.

The good news is that for most of us, this will probably be our last shot at 90+ through the rest of the year as a more fall-like pattern begins to take hold next week.

Reminder! Look up just after 8:30pm tonight to see a pretty decent International Space Station flyover (should be limited clouds, we’re near new moon, and it’ll be almost directly overhead). Anyone in Virginia will be able to see it but here are some details specifically for the greater Harrisonburg area:

-Visible duration: about 6 minutes 38 seconds, from 8:30:59 to 8:37:37 PM
-Peak: 8:34:18 PM
-Maximum altitude: 87 degrees, meaning it gets to within only 3 degrees of directly overhead
-Brightness: -3.2 magnitude, so it should be very bright and easy to spot

International Space Station flyover Wednesday night around 8:30pm! A neat opportunity to catch it with pretty ideal timing and mostly clear skies.

It’ll be visible across all Virginia with an almost direct overhead pass across much of the I-81 corridor.

It will look like a bright star moving quickly across the sky. There are currently 7 people onboard, some of which have been in orbit over 7 months.

On this day in 2003 (September 6th), Hurricane Isabel formed in the eastern Atlantic. It went on to make landfall in the Outer Banks on September 18th and became Virginia’s costliest weather disaster at the time causing an estimated $1.85 billion in damage.

Gusts to 60mph and 4-8” of rain were common across the Shenandoah Valley. Some locations along the Blue Ridge received as much as 20”.

Along the coast, Isabel packed an even bigger punch with a gust of 107mph recorded at Gwynns Island in Mathews County, 100 mph at Reedville, and 92 mph in Hampton.

The front has pushed to our south and cooler, drier air is beginning to filter in as Canadian high pressure nudges in. Parts of western VA will struggle to get out of the 70s today with dew points creeping down towards 60. Really nice! Heat and humidity steadily creep up again after today.

We have one more day of widespread shower and thunderstorm activity as a cold front sags south through the area, this eventually setting up what looks to be a very nice second half of the Labor Day Weekend as high pressure builds in behind it ushering in cooler temperatures and less humid conditions.

Latest radar shows a cluster of showers and embedded storms diving southeast across WV, these likely pushing into the greater Harrisonburg area by mid to late morning so probably going to be a wet start to the JMU/Liberty game at noon. Behind this initial round, there will be some scattered pop up activity through the afternoon and evening, really anywhere across the state could get hit. There is some severe potential with highest chances south of I-64.

Heat and humidity returns next week so enjoy the nice break tomorrow!
