This is a good reminder to everyone to check your voter registration! Midterms are in two months. It is incredibly important that you get out and vote and don’t be naive to the fact that some people are trying to make that as hard as possible. Your vote matters!

Sharing this here because it’s important the community be informed on these kinds of decisions.

If you know me, you know I am a fierce animal advocate. I have been involved in animal rescue for almost a decade. But you may also know that I was a Military Police Officer and I also believe in ensuring our Police are funded appropriately but not overfunded (ie not everything is a police matter and we need to make sure resources are where they will be most useful for responding to the communities needs).

This was a bandaid decision to try and get a quick fix to a retention problem within our Sheriff’s office. As leaders in our community we need to work on more permanent funding solutions. I don’t want to pretend to have all the answers but I also don’t want to pretend that this isn’t indicative of a much larger problem that needs to be taken very seriously. Not only do we need to consider how we are going to support our shelter with this massive budget cut but also consider that we need a sustainable budget plan for supporting our Sheriffs office longterm as well (keep in mind raises etc often need to happen annually to stay competitive, not to mention providing quality training, maintenance, equipment etc). Public safety is incredibly important and it’s also important to recognize that the shelter is also a part of that (getting dogs off the streets, rabies vaccines, owner surrenders all contribute to public safety and wellbeing).

I encourage everyone to reach out to their representatives and hear their plan for a more sustainable budget and what we as a community can do to better support the shelter through this.

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend! Like many families, we spent it grilling out, swimming and then going to see the fireworks!

Sunday we went to see Hamilton in Louisville at the Kentucky Center. It was an excellent show. I had never seen it in person, but loved the soundtrack. And an awesome reminder that Democracy is messy and imperfect. We have to work hard if we want it to work!

I couldn’t agree more with this sentiment. It’s about our community. It’s about people deserving to feel safe, having their rights protected, being able to afford health insurance, housing, groceries, utilities etc. It’s about ACTUALLY trying to make things “great” for everyone and not just your rich friends. I want everyone in this community to thrive, not just the well off and powerful. I hope most can agree!

Make sure you are preparing now for the bad weather coming our way! I know so many in our community have livestock to care for as well. In a addition to making sure you have everything you need to keep you and your family safe, it would be prudent to also stock up on extra hay, straw feed and fill water buckets/jugs in advance in case of frozen pipes. Let’s do all we can to help each other during this storm! If you need assistance with something please don’t hesitate to reach out so we can try and mobilize our community to assist.
