The Valley Land Fund

The Valley Land Fund The Valley Land Fund is committed to educating the public about the importance of land conservation and protection of our natural resources.

VLF was founded by a dedicated group of local business owners and professionals who had a vision of preserving , expanding and enhancing native wildlife in the Rio Grande Valley. We use a number of tools for outreach and education purposes, with the most popular being our annual wildlife photo contest. The use of photography to educate citizens of our area is one of the most important aspects of o

ur approach to wildlife conservation. Through the use of award-winning images, we are able to make individuals, young and old, aware of our wonderful natural heritage and the existence of every species of plant and animal that is in jeopardy. Wildlife Photo Contest
Our wildlife photo contests and photography books have been wildly successful tools in our goal to promote native wildlife habitat conservation. The Valley Land Fund celebrates, endorses, and recognizes the power of wildlife photography and its importance to conservation. Private Landowners
Private Landowners play a crucial role in the conservation of wildlife in America today. Without their participation in conservation, entire ecosystems will be lost, never to be appreciated by future generations. The Valley Land Fund believes that wildlife conservation can best be promoted through sound economic incentives for private landowners to protect and enhance the diversity of habitats.

Today is Earth Day. A moment to celebrate the land we all depend on.

But for those committed to conservation, every day is Earth Day.

At Valley Land Fund, caring for the land isn’t a once-a-year message—it’s a daily responsibility. It’s protecting native habitat, conserving open spaces, and working alongside landowners who steward the land with purpose.

Because conservation is about more than land—it’s about water, wildlife, and the future we leave behind.

Every acre protected. Every partnership built. Every generation inspired.

Today, we celebrate the Earth.
Tomorrow, we keep doing the work.

Because for conservation, every day is Earth Day.

We want to share an important update regarding Salineño Wildlife Preserve.

Recent federal updates indicate that contracts have been awarded for border infrastructure construction across portions of the Rio Grande Valley, including areas in Starr County.

While many details are still unfolding, current mapping places the Salineño Wildlife Preserve within an active project corridor. At this time, we do not yet have confirmation of exact impacts to the preserve. However, the location and alignment patterns raise real concerns about potential effects to access, habitat connectivity, and long-term stewardship of this special place.

The Salineño Wildlife Preserve is a globally recognized birding destination and a vital part of the Rio Grande Valley’s ecological network. Its riparian habitat supports migratory birds, native wildlife, and provides a meaningful place of connection for residents and visitors alike.

We are actively engaging with federal agencies and elected officials to better understand what this means for our 2.6-acre preserve and to ensure that conservation considerations are part of the conversation moving forward.

Our commitment remains the same—to protect and steward the lands entrusted to us, and to ensure that places like this tiny preserve continue to connect people to nature for generations to come.

We will continue to share updates as we learn more, and we are grateful for the community that cares so deeply about this place.

Last Friday, we lost someone whose quiet vision helped shape Salineño as we know it — Pat DeWind.

In 1984, Pat and her husband Gale placed a simple bird feeder along the Rio Grande. What followed was the beginning of a beloved birding community that continues today at Salineño Wildlife Preserve.

Many who visit now may never have met Pat, but every feeder raised, every chair set beneath the trees, and every shared sighting traces back to her.

Our season closes March 15th. If you feel moved to honor Pat’s memory, Valley Land Fund has been listed as a tribute option, with gifts supporting continued habitat protection for migratory birds and wildlife.

Walk in. Sit quietly. Look up. 🤍🕊️
